How old is the car and how many miles on it?
I am confused by battery light warning light coming on first, thinking alternator is not charging battery, etc. Does it crank or is it completely dead?

So we know it is not your battery. If it is your Cat., I believe MB warranties it for 100 or 150K miles. You may want to check with a local dealer to see if they will cover it. This is not an inexpensive part. I would call and ask them what the warranty on a Cat. Converter is before getting into details.
Good luck.

Webb,
Considering that an internal combustion engine needs fuel, air and spark to run, it might be the fuel pump, coils, weak battery, Cat. converter to name a few. You can eliminate these possibilities one at a time by checking to at least hear if the fuel pump is running, check to see if the plugs produce spark, etc.
Easiest way is to get the codes the car has already generated but you need a Diagnostics System for that.

Charging the battery might not do it if the battery is bad.
You could call Mercedes Roadside Assistance and they can try a new battery. Its a free service, they will come out to your car, and you only pay for the battery if you need it.
I would get a brand new battery and try that first.
