S600 AMG/Sports vs. non-AMG

Hi all,
What's the difference between S600 AMG/sports package vs. the non-AMG?
I know the wheels and front spoiler's different, but are the brakes/seats/suspension different? I recently came across a clean S600 w/ low miles(I will need to call the Chrysler Warranty guy) to get extended warranty, but curious whether this is worth it vs. waiting for a Sports version.
Also, even though my S55 is supposed to be AMG, frankly for the S-chassis, I'm not sure how much sportier it really is, esp relative to S600 that also has the ABC already.
Thx in advance for input.
Patrick

Where to start? The Italians or the Germans?

From what I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong. The "AMG" sports package is merely for looks. The brakes, suspension, etc etc are all the same. And, I do believe that the S55 and the S600 both have ABC installed from the factory. What year is your S55?

Cheers,
Ricky

My S55 is 2002 and is the N/A V8 - no supercharger. The unique thing about my S55 is that it was fully loaded, including the VERY rare reclining rear seats that has both heat/cooling - I've seen very feel S55's w/ them, though the S600's often have them.

Faher is correct, in that the ONLY thing the AMG package gives you is ground effects, aka new chin spoiler, side skirts, and I believe the rear valance is different as well. You also get 18" AMG wheels. IMHO, I looked and decided to ONLY buy one with the AMG package, a $7k option by the way, as it makes the car look MUCH more sportier.

Brakes, suspension, engine etc are all the same, as it is ONLY a LOOKS package, aka a NON AMG equiped car.

But you do get the WONDERFUL TT V-12

Definitely worth holding out for one with the sports package as it isn't like they are all that rare.

IMO, the AMG package turns a good looking car into a great looking car....although a non-AMG 600 has to the be the ultimate Q car.

Agree with Fraser, this cosmetic package improves the looks of the standard MB car greatly. It is rather pricey new, around $6-7K now but IMHO worth the price.

Just drove the S600. Yes, I do wish it had the Sports package, but I think that's why the car is priced lower. In particular, I think it's hard to find a 2004 S600 with only 44k miles that's been dealer serviced and still near low blue book. As for as driving experience, however, from my test drive it wasn't that different from my S55 on the handling. In other words, I think the SPORTS/AMG is mainly cosmetic(?).
P.S. This car WAS CPO'd, but the warranty is over now. Hearing that Chrysler/MB warranty no longer available - anyone else have the current best option for V12TT cars?

As for a 2004 S600, there are 10 cars currently listed on Auto Trader throughout the US, prices range from $24K to $39K.

Those prices seem high compared to this '06 S600 w/AMG package for $31k w/54,000 miles.

Autotrader prices are ALWAYS high. Mostly dealers and a few wishful thinkers. Use Ebay for current market pricing, that is IF it sells. And then I use Autotrader to locate and negotiate from there. Just food for thought.

PS: I have sold and bought my last three high end cars through Autotrader, so it does work as far as getting advertisement.

Read the thread from the top. The S600 (as did all non-AMG W220s) came with the option to buy an AMG appearance package. Purely cosmetic and came with AMG wheels, front lip and side skirts.

There is no such as an S600 AMG.

2004 S600
So bought reconditioned 18x9 rims for my 2004 S600. Will 245/45R18 for front work as well will 265/40R18 work on rears? Was even contemplating 255 front and 275 rears...what think you?

Yes 245 45 18 front and 265 40 18 rear will work

A better staggered size is 245 45 18 front and 275 40 18 rear. I have that and it gives you more protection on the rear sidewall

Another popular combination is to use the same size tire on all 4 corners and the best size to use is 265 40 18 on all four corners .

Agree with Tusabes the cars with staggered wheels come from the factory with 245/45/18 front and 275/40/18 rear. That is the setup I have. Just remember with the staggered wheels you can only rotate left to right if they aren't directional tires. If they are directional then you can't rotate at all. At least with the same size on all four corners you can rotate.

To be more clear , you can rotate the tires if all 4 are the same size , but you can't rotate the wheels if the wheels are staggered width - you would have to take the tires off and swap them
