First of all Hi

My car was broken into 2 days ago ( Left hand front window smashed ) and the thief pinched my wifes iPod which was on full display for everyone to see !! ( S280 2001 Model - Audio 10 with no CD Multi )

It was raining quite heavy at the time so the left hand door panel was wet when she came back to the car. Upon arrival the speakers were making a thumping / distortion / crackling noise which i thought was quite strange.

I collected the car as she didnt want to drive it back home and i noticed that the radio doesnt work anymore. No attempt was made at stealing it ( basic cassette player - AUDIO 10 ) and there is a - - - - sign on the instrument panel with "AUDIO" ABOVE IT. The Ipod was not connected at the time of theft.

Ive checked all the fuses ( in all 3 fuse boxes ) and everything is ok. If you pull the 15 amp fuse for the radio the red LED stops flashing and the speakers stop thumping. When you re-fit the fuse the speakers thump and the noise continues. The noise has got quiter and happens ever 7 seconds. Ive disconnected the battery and checked other fuses but no luck.

Ive fitted new glass which was extremely easy and dried of the wiring / elec seat control but the stereo still doesnt work and now im scratching my head - any ideas ?

wow Ive never seen a w220 without the COMAND nav screen!

In the UK you only got COMAND as standard on the pre-2003 models if you had a 500 or above. The 430, 320, 320 CDI and 280 all came like that. Looks really weird I know!

And 32 degrees on the AC! Where are you Antarctica?

LOL - you ever been to the UK. Its the middle of summer here and weve had constant rain for 14 days !! The temp was up to dry the interior as it was damp after the break in.

As for the car - you would think on a £45k car you would get command as standard ?Who the hell has a cassette to play these days ?.....Oh well

Well now, yeah, but I remember when the W220 first came out and Satellite Navigation was far from standard, even in 7 Series/A8 territory...if it did it was some really small screen thing and not the large screen COMAND type system. We look at the 2003-2006 widescreen system as state of the ark but the back in '99 it was top of the line.

My father's '98 W210 had a Blaupunkt headunit with inbuilt satellite navigation from the factory. This was regarded as almost space age! In fact that headunit was damn good; had SW, MW, LW, AM, FM, RadioText, Satellite Navigation and instead or removing the head unit there was a little card that you slid in/out. Useful with the plague of headunit radio thefts in the UK.
