This happened to about 3 years ago and dealer wanted to change the left rear for a lot of money. It was around service time so I didn't just take it in for the tail light malfunction.
The malfunction was in and a lot, it usually happened when I put the left turn signal on, the malfunction would appear on dash then it would be out the next time I turned the ignition on. Sometimes it stayed on longer, very erratic.
After the service I took the car home and took the plugs out from the bulbs housing and clean them with a contact spray cleaner and they have been working ever since.

Had a similar problem with the left turn signal. I swapped bulb and socket. Left signal still did not work. I looked on the tail light assembly and seen that it was pitted were the contact would stop. This caused the signal to sometimes not work. At one time it would light but was dim. I filled in the pit with solder and sanded it smooth. Works great now.
