Fuse Spark and PSE Pump Problem

Hello. I have a 2004 S500 4matic. Hoping I could get some advice. My locks wont lock or unlock from key FOB or from interior, trunk does not lock, and soft close does not work. Read a lot of posts and came to remove FUSE 62 for central locking and put it back in and still didnt work. So then I came to put new fuse in, it sparked. I am assuming that is indicative of a bigger problem. On the fuse diagram there was other fuses listed for the central locking like fuse 13, but I am assuming fuse 62 is the problem. My question is why did it spark? Does it suggest the PSE pump is bad and giving that fuse a short? Is there a cheaper solution besides replacing pump, or another suggestion to try? THanks

Angela,

I drive a 2004 S600 and recently had the same problem. Unfortunately I tried everything but ended up having to purchase a PSE pump for about $550. Ordered from genuinemercedesparts.com. My husband removed the old one and installed the new one himself. Everything works great now..even the soft close on the doors and trunk.

How do know you dont have a leak somewhere that caused the original problem? I dont want to have to replace the pump only to have it damaged again.

I DON'T know if I may have a leak somewhere that caused the original problem. I DO know that since my husband put this part on months ago I haven't had a problem since.

Angela,

No one can assure you that a recommended procedure will fix your car. We can't see it, hook up diagnostic equipment, or even listen to it for faults.

But we can rely on what you said, for an indication. If you had a leak, and your pump was OK, replacing the fuse would not blow the fuse right away. The pump would run, you could listen to the doors and trunk (and lumbar supports) for the leak. Eventually, the fuse would blow again.

But because your fuse blows right away, the pump is likely already seized, and therefore, has failed. Replacing the pump may not fix your whole problem. It would be a first, and very likely necessary, first step toward troubleshooting.

The pump could have failed because it was simply old and worn out. Or, it could have failed from a leak that wore it out. In either case, it looks like you need to replace it. As to whether there is anything else wrong, we simply cannot tell at this point.

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. The 20A fuse keep blowing, and all lock & soft assist stop working.

Replacing the PSE pump ($650 part) fixed the problem. All work well now.

My fuse did not burn but my pump did. Plastic cover melted by the motor creating 2 holes on the plastic and ooh what a smell. Have new pump now had to reset the fault codes and fix leaks. Front door actuators still leak so am sure to close them manually all the way till I get around and fix them.
Go around the car and listen to leaks on soft close doors and trunk lid. Also listen to lumbar support. Pump should only run about 4-6 seconds after door or trunk is soft-closed. If it runs longer you have a problem and eventually your pump will burn out again. If you hear a hissing sound at the doors or trunk. Close them manually all the way until you fix the leaking soft-close actuator.

door lock issue (surprise)

My door locks etc do not work by the fob or interior controls, my seat adjustments work fine (except the lumbar). I hear the pump running in the trunk, I removed the pump and checked the rotor and vanes and they are all intact. I do not know where to go next.

Have you reset the PSE computer?
This is done by removing the yellow 20-Amp fuse behind the floor lamp in the carpeted wall behind the right rear passenger's heels. Wait a few seconds, then replace the fuse. If some of the non-functional devices start working again, even temporarily, this indicates that there is a leak in that device. The computer monitors how long it takes for the device to function. If the time exceeds that programmed into the computer, the computer cuts off the device to save the PSE pump. Removing and replacing the fuse resets the computer so it will try that device again.
