S500 Defroster? Is it working or what?
Hey guys, so the S has a defroster like i've never seen before, barely visible tiny lines. can someone tell me if it should work as any other regular defroster or not.
I thought mine was broken and wanted to take it to the dealer for repairs, till one day with a thin layer of ice i noticed that it actualy did melt it but the watter remained much like all other mornings when i had dew on the window. it just seems not to work beyond that point.
Can anyone shed some light on that?
Also does the windshiled have a defroster build in as well? or is that a myth?
because i do not see anything special on the glass.
thanks yall

When i have morning dew on the window my defroster does nothing it seems. I only noticed it work when the window was iced over, and even then it just melted the ice and water remained.

I believe your defrosters are working normal. Defrosters usually melt the ice and leave water like water on glass after a rainy day. Anybody else want to imput?

When I was driving my S-Classes in cold country, the rear defroster melted ice, but left water on the rear windshield; the water was usually cleared by air flow as the car moved (and unless I removed snow from the roof, the ice/water were replaced by the blowing snow).
The switch remains on initially for about 10 minutes. If the water bothers you, turn it on again.

its strange, all other cars i've ever had, including mercedes, seemed to work better than that. no matter what the weather was, it would clear the rear window.
Thanks guys.

The rear window "defroster" is just what the name implies. Although the heat generated from it may eventually dry the water as well, but it is not a dryer.

FWIW, I understand the OP's concerns. I thought the same. The rear defroster works but is not nearly as effective as other cars I've had. Thought maybe it was defective. The wires in the other rear windows I've had were more visible. Now I think it is just inefficient.

Coincidentally, I used the rear defroster on my S500 last night for the first time and thought, Is this thing working? With only a light mist/frost on the window, it took several minutes for it to clear from top to bottom. Not very efficient at all.

I have the same problem. I live in Iowa and it has been -5 here with wind chills of -30. I work nights so when I come out in the morning my car is frosted over. The rear defroster seems to do nothing. What a disappointment. Bummer

it might be a design issue. The heater lines across our glass is very thin unlike typical other cars and it takes longer to defrost. Our glass is very thick as well. Mine works OK but I don't have to use it very often living in Texas with a garaged car.
