there should be a round cap in the middle of the pedal on the part that sits against the floor. pop the cap off to reveal a 10mm nut and washer, remove both then the pedal should come off the floor and the only thing holding it is the wire it connects too. once swapped reinstall in reverse order and your done.

I'm not sure if the 2001 is similar to the 2004 but is sounds like somehow you may have put it into a manual mode. I don't use this option on mine so not sure if when you are shifting it into gear you are inadvertently bringing it to the left when you place it in drive? I've never had mine stuck this way so uncertain but just a suggestion. Try putting it into gear and make sure the shifter is in the middle and you haven't pulled it to the left by mistake. Others may have better suggestions than this though.

When you put the car into Drive, does the shift indicator on the instrument panel show S and D, or does it show S and a number 1, 2, 3, or 4?
If you look at the shifter plate, you will see a + and a - next to the D. This allows you to shift the transmission manually by moving the shifter left and right. If there is a number on the dash, move the shifter to the right repeatedly until it shows a D on the instrument panel. Then form the habit of pushing the shifter back and to the right as you shift to Drive.
Let us know what you find - there are other possibilities if that isn't the answer to your problem.
You will also have a button on the shift plate that will have an S and a C, or S and W, or something similar. The S stands for Standard or Summer, the C stands for Comfort, the W stands for Winter. In S, the transmission starts in first gear and shifts normally. In C or W, the transmission starts in second gear, and shifts earlier and more softly. Your choice of patterns...
