Found a Nice 1:18 W220 Scale Model

When I bought my W220s (a '00 and a '05, both LWB) the only die-cast (metal) W220 model cars available through my dealerships were small versions, around 1:43 scale - 3 inches or so long. Other classes had some very nice 1:18 models, approximately 10 inches long. I wanted the larger W220 model, and recently began looking for one again.

After about 2 hours of online searching, I located some sources of 1:18 S-Class models. I thought I'd post this in case any other members wanted one. This is not an advertisement for any seller, or for Maisto; it's simply that Maisto makes the only 1:18 scale die cast W220 model I could find. The one pictured below I got from BTSrack (http://www.BTSrack.com/); it retailed for just under $27, and shipping was just under $15. It is a Maisto Premiere Edition model. Maisto says it is the official partner with MB for the models; and various modelers' sites I reviewed claim the Maisto Premiere Edition is the best of the die-cast models.

The model seems to be a SWB (I measured the door on my '05, and converted it to scale; the model's rear door is shorter than it would be for the LWB). Still, one must look closely to tell. The wheels turn with the steering wheel; all 4 wheels are on springs; the hood, front doors, and trunk open; the engine compartment looks nice, as does the interior, which is somewhat detailed; it has burl wood in the proper places, a COMAND screen, seat belts, instrument cluster, and like my '05, a burl wood steering wheel and shift knob. The hood ornament swivels (something I failed to notice before taking one or two of the pics). The front windows are rolled down and do not move.

Maisto labels it a 1998 model year, first year of production in Europe; it is clearly pre-facelift. The only one I could find was silver (my '00 was black, my '05 is silver - so it reminds me of both). It comes on a plastic display base with a reflective surround on 3 sides.

I also found one (used) on Amazon, listing for $40 + shipping; and another listed there as well for $400 (possibly a typo by the seller, but that's what the price showed). I found no other listings in the U.S.

Click the pics below to enlarge.

Now, to find a '78 R107 model!

I like it and would certainly buy one but I am thrown off by the pre-facelift and the 1998 model year label.

Yes, they were minor disappointments for me too. However, since I will probably display it without the base, the only contention is that it's pre-facelift (and barely noticeable, it is SWB). And under the hood, it's not going to have your engine.

Whatever there's gas in...
I had one of these in 2000 that I actually used to mix and match parts from some junk 1:18 scale cars. I glued quad exhaust (before the 55k was out) and some 20's on it, and sharpied the tail lights. It was pretty baller.

You can make little AMG and S55/S65 badges for it. Would that be posing, putting AMG stuff on that S430 base version? lol

Wow this thing is really detailed, inside and out. Even the seats have a soft coating.

I dont know how I got this color, since they dont even sell it, but I got the silver and this charcoal color one! It has a different box than OP too without the mirrored sides, mine is checkerboard pattern

I dont need the charcoal one, anyone want it??
