Instrument Cluster Repair?

I'm posting this for a friend of ours that has a 2001 S500. The instrument cluster is out and one of the MB indie shops has quoted:

$952.00 for the cluster (part)
$118.12 for "cluster black, R&R cluster" (labor)
$595.21 for "Repair instrument cluster" (labor)

Estimate is $1739.13 out the door.

Our friends are going through a financially difficult time, so I'm trying to see if there is anything that can done to get the cost lower.

They are located in the Palm Springs area.

Mercedes
yes there is a 10 year warranty due to defective design, so HURRY! if its right outside the warranty time, petition for goodwill repair.

Call several dealerships , many give you the runaround. I had to call three before one admitted to know about the warranty

Tusabes is right. Many dealers have no clue about this and give you a load of BS. Do not let them tell you it has anything to do with a recall.
It has absolutely zero to do with a recall or your instrument cluster part number.
It is an extension of your factory warranty, even if your warranty is expired; for 10 years and UNLIMITED miles.
I have attached the Warranty Addendum from Mercedes for your review.
Print it and take it with you to the stealership.

I have an instrument cluster. Still NEW, in box. If your friend deal with dealer don't work out well, let me know. I can sell it to you for much cheaper price, and refer your friend to an MB indy shop in Los Angeles (MB Tech in Monterey Park) who would probably charge $100-150 for program & install.

Remove and install the IC takes about 5 min, anyone with a $5 key could do it.

I also know of a place in Florida that fix it for around $400, takes couple days.

Nevertheless, check with dealer first. Hopefully the 2001 would still qualify for the 10 years warranty on the IC
