Cluster Illumination problem w220 S320

Hi, my S320 W220 2000 model cluster illumination just gave up on me,
wondering if it's covered by warranty ? one dealer tells me due to the cluster ID number i've missed out ? or does a vin No come into play eg:
WDB2200652A145874. Not sure what to do, have arranged an Instrument repair guy to look at it, or should I persist with the dealer, and can it be Repaired ?

Thanks

George

The MB warranty is for 10 years from date from in service date.

Hi All. First off, many thanks to everyone who posts as it's a wealth of information. Saved me heaps of grief and loot.
Regarding the Instrument Cluster - No such recall in Australia and too scared to ask a dealer so went searching. In one of Skylaw's many excellent guides, there is BBA Reman. However the Google search is somewhat confusing ( to me , at least ) . The one I used is
BBA Remanufacturing INC
300 Myles Standish Blvd
Taunton MA 02780
PH 1 (866) 573 2740
They do an EBay which does come up with a search for " Mercedes Instrument Cluster ", just gotta keep scrolling till you get to it.
My cluster went completely dead, came back then slowly died, so with the help of my local independent mechanic with the tools to remove it, I packed and sent it off. US $ 165 for repair and more than that for post and insurance from OZ return.
As much as I can say is it now works great and it's a lifetime warranty for the current owner.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mercedes-...item4cf6aff9c6
is what's on EBay as this point in time.
Hope I'm not breaking any posting rules. Hope it helps others.
Cheers.

I personally wouldn't rule out your cluster not being covered as again, the 10 year warranty starts on the in service date of the car, not the production date. There's always the possibility that the car was manufactured in late 2000 and then used as a demo or driven by some employee of the dealer for several months. This could push the in service date into late 2001. Certainly not likely but possible. And if you are close, perhaps they will work with you. To be sure, call 800-for-merc, USA MB headquarters, to get the answer. Have your VIN handy as they will need this. These things are too expensive not to make a simple phone call. If not covered, the clusters are repairable. Do a search here to find repair sources. While you're at it, ask MB if all recall items for the car have been taken care. Good luck.

Thanks Jud, but my build date of 12/99 was complianced in Australia in Feb 2000 and first registered 29 Feb 2000, so I'm out.
I've heard a figure of $3000 in Australia, only hearsay I stress, so my repair seems relatively cheap and very easy.
