Without actually doing it myself, I'll take the bet that it is VERY labor intensive. You might even have to raise the engine. Just ask ANY MB shop the question, then look into it yourself.
Bottom line, OOOOHHHH Yeah, It is going to cost you.
On another point, I have NEVER heard of one going bad?

It could be a big job depends on which part of the oil pan you gonna to do.
There are two parts of Engine Oil Pan: bottom which hold the oil, top which connect to the crankcase.
For the bottom oil pan, off 13 M6 bolts and lower the pan. To install, clean the old seal/gasket thoroughly then apply new seal, bolt on. There is no real gasket to order, seal/gasket maker need to be used. You have to understand how to apply the seal.
For the top oil pan, seems the engine will be held then the front sub-frame will need to be lowered to give space to maneuver top oil pan out. This is more complex then the bottom oil pan remove for sure.
I never did it nor even think about doing so. Above is MB process.

I must be really dumb or maybe just plain retarded. Or I misunderstand the question?
This is the easiest job ever. Remove about 10 bolts, scrape off old gasket, squeeze on a new gasket with the black gasket maker. I did this about 6 months ago, seemed pretty easy to me? Took maybe 1 hr?

Oh please, let me know when was the last time you changed your own oil
And IF you do, then we can talk about swapping out cams, diffs, trannies, your pick
Get over yourself my friend. My answer was to simply state that it was probably NOT in his best interest to DIY it.
IF it was only the lower pan, have at it.
My bet is you would not
Have fun special one.
And YES, thanks Bruce and Howard as you guys really do help all of us.

You're joking right?
I mean come on. A new guy comes on and asks an innocent question, and you respond by being a smart *** to him...Did I miss something?
And yes, I'd love to talk cams and all that. I have a project 2002 in my gargage I'm working on

I simply stated that it would NOT be an easy job
AS far as engine building, cams and diffs, please send me a PM and I will gladly talk about all day. I have been doing the car thing for over 30 years now. Raod raced for almost 20. This thread is NOT the best place for this talk, IMHO.
What's your project?

Quickly though, I just bought a 1971 BMW 2002. I have an M20/ 5 speed, LSD with half shafts to put in. Kinda waiting for spring to start tearing down. Many have told me it's not hard to get more out of the M20, but my knowledge is limited to engine internals like cams and other details.
