Strange sound

Hey guys i have a question about a strange sound coming from front end. Well actually 2 sound. I changed the lower control arm on driver side recently and decided to ride with radio off to listen to ride. 1 i hear creaking sound going over bumps.feel like i hear it more over uneven bumps. 2 this is the one i dont understand. While driving i hear and feel a rough woool sound for 2 seconds. I feel it in left foot pedal and gear shifter. Happens frequently while excellerating and when turning left or right mostly left it feels like engine is vibrating on left foot rest Also the engine has been getting louder for the pass couple of months. Hearing it more than when i first brought it.

I did some research and think it could be motor mounts tranny mounts that is causing the vibrating but i want to know what the forum think. This is what i done since i had car;

Lower control arm dr side
Arnott strut
Ac compressor
Idle pully
Flex belt

Previous owner right side lower control arm
Arnott strutt

Thanks guys

It may be the engine mount, especially the left one.

Did you notice some colorless dripping under the car? The engine mounts filled with some liquid and troubles usually begin when it leaks.
There two mounts supporting the engine an one back under the tranny, the latter usually not causing any trouble.

When my mounts failed, I heard a deep grwoling noise mostly around 1500-2000 rpm

Engine mounts are fluid-filled, and the shop I use tell me that a leak will be very obvious. The transmission mount is not fluid filled, but it can be checked pretty easily, on a lift.

Creaking sound going over bumps may be your lower ball joints.

No i did not notice any leaks but car engine noise increased dramatically over the last two to three months. Only heard the growl after turned off music to hear how the ride sound after change of control arm. That growl is exactly what happens at 1500-2000 rpm and when in a turn. the mounts probly failed a couple a months ago.

The creaking when going over bumps sideways might be the antisway bar twisting in its rubber mounts, or dry links from the bar to the lower arms. You can see the bar and mounts on the '03 cars by pulling the pans under the engine.

OK, so I started hearing the dreaded "creaking sound" yesterday when going over speed bumps and/or driving slowly. So the first thing I think about is lower ball joints. I called a couple of places that I have done business with before and received 2 totally different quotes on replacing the lower ball joints. One stated about $1000 to replace both front lower ball joints and the other said around $500. BTW, the $1000 guy said it would be about a 7 hour job, seemed quite extreme to me.

After further review and some serious searching I realized that it would probably be more feasible for me to replace the lower control arms on both sides since they come with the ball joints and bushings already intact. Seems to me that this would be a much easier and quicker job - should cost significantly less.

I have a 2003 S500 with Active Body Control. Has anyone attempted this a a DIY, also, what brand of control arms would you recommend. I have seen prices for Dorman, Moog, Beck Arnley, and Lemfoeder. However, I must admit that the Lemfoerder parts look totally different than the others. Don't even know if they are the right part but they keep popping up.

Any experience and/or suggestions?

Hey i just replaced my lower control arm on driver side. Do you have a 4 matic because the control arm is diffrent than non 4 matic. Its like a wish bone. Even though seven hours seem a bit high to me. Even 3 and a half hours on each side. Yeah the book might say 7 hrs for both side to put on but it does not take that long. My mechanic only took about 1 hr and a half to replace the lower control arm and he said he could have been finished sooner but the sway bar was a job to get back in place. So the ball joints should be an easier job i think.
The ball joints oem only cost less than 30$ each. So 940 for labor is crazy. Even 440 sounds better but still make sure you get oem parts. Mymercedesparts.com is where i get my parts. You will save a bundle on parts there. I paid 510 for my control arm the lowest i found else where was 780. The stealer wanted 980 for same part. Good luck.

I don't have the 4-matic but the ABC. Lower control arms for cars with ABC seem to be cheaper than those without it.

I have the ABC without 4-matic. My indy guy said that it is mostly likely my control arm. However, the picture he showed me does not look like mine. Any ideas what it should look like?
