New Owner of quirky 2004 S600

Hello all. Longtime BMW owner here picked up my first MB about a year ago. I bought a 2004 s600 with 57k miles on it for what seemed like a steal. I knew the car had sat in storage for about 10 months before I bought it. I researched the known problems and was expecting to spend a few bucks to bring her up to speed. Then it began......The transmission, replaced in 2008, started acting up. Unfortunately I had to have it rebuilt 3 months after I bought it. At the same time the ABC pump went and was replaced. I was planning on doing a tune and having the AC compressor replaced (it's bad according to my independent guy). Yesterday, while driving, the entire COMMAND display went blank then displayed the message "NAVIGATION UNAVAILABLE" then shut off. I can turn it on for a few seconds but nothing works. Radio, Nav, etc. is all "unavailable." I purchased the SIRIUS SDARS unit to install but I dont want to even think about that until I get this COMMAND problem fixed.
I am looking for a starting point to troubleshoot. The Navigation CD ejects fine. The trunk CD changer works fine.
thoughts...?
Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum along with a controversy model.
S600 is indeed a super car. But you need either money or skill to enjoy it.

The price like steal paid as a ticket to enter this game.
The few bucks prepared to spend is far from enough.
Before you start to play please put on your helmet others call it warranty unless you are an athletic.

Don't think about upgrading anything until revealing and fixing major issues. Yes, try to findout all the existing issues and plan your fix. This will be a long journey which lead you to enjoy an unparalleled ride.

Be prepared and good luck.

For your Comand issue, many instances are caused by coffee bath. So you may need to remove the unit and to see any liquid is there. Dry and clean it thoroughly.
I may also check the back of the Comand and other equipments in the loop to see any connection is loose which cause the entire loop broken.

Good luck w/ diagnosis...let us know what you find out.
My 05 S600 CPO was about to expire, and I ended up paying close to $8k for a 4 yr extension. Thus far 10 months in, it appears to have been money well paid as I've already saved $2k.

P.S. Quick question for other V12TT owners - how often do you need to add motor oil? I got a mssg today to add 1 liter. Also, I have some mobile one 10-30 and I'm in northern California. Is that ok to add as i'm not sure what is currently in there and whether it's ok to mix. Thx.

I change oil every 6kmiles/10kkm and never add oil in between. I do have to add gas very often though,

If you don't know what is in there try to do an oil change to replace existing oil with Mobil 1 0W-40 (European Car Formula). Then keep using it.
Although mixing is not a big issue but stick with proper fluid is critical in a long run.

Thanks.

Mine is a 2005 S600 w/ just over 100k miles now. She drinks a steady stream of Mobil-1 0w40 at a rate of 1Qt every 1000 miles, more frequently if I'm flogging her hard. No leaks, just consumed. I did try a 5-30 "high mileage oil" and it slowed it slightly (like 1 qt per 1200 miles), but my paranoia of improper viscosity made me switch back. So I now just keep 2 qts of the 0-40 in the storage area inside the hub of the spare tire at all times to top off as needed. I'm curious if any of the off the shelf seal conditioner additives introduced into the base 0-40 might help a little bit. But again, I'm paranoid, especially with the two turbos needing proper lubrication.

bzliteyear, I had the Add 1.0 liter of oil message recently, turned out I need to add 2 litre's to bring it back to normal levels so check that out to make sure. As I recall If its not telling you how much oil you have in there you can turn key to position 2, put the ODO up onscreen, hit R 3 times & the volage info comes up, use the arrow on the wheel to click through & you'll see a message saying how many quarts you have.

I agree with haoz129 and the others as far as 0-40. I'm in OR, and temps here aren't that bad so 10-30 should be ok for now. The big thing is to at least try to keep the same type of oil in it. If you had it changed last with mobil 1 and that's what you have more of, then I would either add it or wait and get what you put in before. You could always change the oil again and put in the right stuff...Mobil 1 is good stuff
