A Mercedes obviously!
Question Tyres: What are you running?

The time has come for me to switch out the front tyres. I got the backs done about 6000 miles ago and put Bridgestone Potenza RE970s on to match the OEM Potenzas I had on the front.

The guy at Costco said I'd probably be happier running Michelins on it (I think Pilot Super Sports judging by tirerack.com but I can't remember exactly) but I thought I'd see how and what others run. Given my back tyres are pretty much brand new I don't really want to put new tyres on all four corners at this stage.

I've always thought the ride comfort on my 600 was a bit rough compared to my father's 500 which we had back in the UK. Am not sure if that's for one of a few reasons, his had Airmatic and not ABC, quality of roads in the UK, his was brand new (and mine was 4yrs old at time of purchase) and there has been a 5yr gap between him selling his and me buying mine!

Thoughts would be most welcome. thanks!

I previously had Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS all season tires. Enjoyed them very much. Recently I switch to Continental Extreme Contact DWS because my brother had them on his BMW and with less than 300 miles on the tires he decided to trade the car in. So instead of giving a car to the dealer with basically new tires on it we decided to switch them out. I have put about a thousand miles on the tires (at least 500 on the highway) and so far I enjoy them. The tires are very good on wet roads and cornering. My fronts are 245/45/18 and the rears are 275/40/18.

The contis are popular.

I run Michelin Primacy MXV4. About as comfortable and smooth as tires get.

I've run the following on my S600:

Pilot Sport A/S runflats (245/45-18 front 7 275/40-18 rear):
Awesome dry traction, good wet traction, can't tell you how they did in winter because they went bald in the 8000k miles I drove it between Spring & Fall. Best traction as far as minimal wheel spin at launch hands down.

Continental DWS (245/45-18 all four corners):
Great dry traction, great wet traction, and really good snow traction. Wear was fair (~15,000 miles before they were toast). Had two sets, about the same. Probably my favorite all aound tire.

Currently Nitto Motivo's (245/45-18 all four corners): I've put about 7k miles on them and they are wearing about the same as the Conti DWS's. A little louder than the Conti's, but they are not noisy tires (if that makes sense). Dry traction is not as good as the Conti DWS, but the wet traction is slightly better. Haven't had a chance to try the snow yet.

That being said, on the next change, I've been really tempted to go back to the 275 Pilot Sport A/S runflats on the rear and the Conti DWS 245s on the front until winter hits again.

FWIW, the Nitto Motivos are also on my E500 4-matic now (245/45 17s all four corners). Can't get them to break loose at all. They replaced a set of Goodyear Eagle GT's. The Goodyears were absolute junk, bad traction all around (on a 4wd vehicle...think about it), VERY noisy, and they all cupped towards the end causing massive vibrations and droning in the car. Now I will say I did get 30k miles out of them, but I'd never get them again.

I('m running Michelin Pilot SS on all 4 corners. The traction is superb in rain and dry. They do ride rough with a small amount of tread noise. The rough ride may be improved when I finally sort out the ABC issues.

Had the stock Brgestone 030 PP's which are a great tire but a 140 treadware for a 5000+ pound car is INSANE.

Swithced to Nto 555's and le them. Lasted twice s long, and still ct 1.90 60' times.Going to try the newer Nitto next, but forget the name of it here at work.

Like the cont DWS's, but so far they are wearing QUICK for a 320 treadware on my Audi.

michelin vs bridgestone

i have run them both, i liked the ride quality of the mich teranza but the tire wore really fast in the rear. im back to potenza RE050A. i get around 25k out of fronts and 12 to 15k out of the rears. i drive this car maybe 8k miles a year. these cars simply wear rear tires!. still love the car and proud to say it is a 03 S500 AMG sport and without a doubt the most reliable trouble free MB we have ever owned. also the only one i have ever kept outside warranty.
