help with 20" wheels/tires
What's up guys. I just received my tires for the rims which should be here tuesday. i went with the michelin pilot sport ps2 (2nd edition pilot sports) the tire size I went with was 255/35/20. The rims are chrome Lowenhart LD1s 9" wide all around. After driving for about 5 years and going through 4 different cars, this is the first time I bought custom wheels for my car. Sadly enough the biggest wheels I've ever driven on are 16" and those are my current stocks.
I was hoping to get help with anything I might need to know that is now different from driving on stock wheels. As far as the tire pressure, do I keep it the same as what is suggested on the Gas tank lid? Is it true my speedometer won't be as accurate anymore? The tires I bought claim to be summer tires, does anyone think that was a bad decision considering I live on Long Island, NY? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What's up,
The speedometer will not be affected, so long as you calibrate using the COMAND system. The manual tells you how to do this.
Tire pressure should be around 32-35 psi depending on how much traction you need. Ask the tire guy that's mounting the tires for you.
I dunno about the tires, but aren't the roads pretty bad up there in NY? I'd be more concerned about potholes and such.
Post some pics of your new wheels!

Thanks SportyS. The potholes aren't too bad. They're not that much and the ones that do exist I would just have to avoid. As for the tire pressure I was thinking the same but my friend who owns an 840ci with 19s swears that I'd need about 40-42. So I guess I should ask the person who puts it on. Thanks for letting me know about the calibration thing, didn;t know about that. I'll post pics once I get the rims. Hopefully wed.

summer tires definetly shouldnt be used in winter. if you want to keep those rims on in the winter, Michelin makes Pilot Sport A/S high performance all-season tires that will get you through the winter just fine. they are availible in the same size; 255/35/20.

yea i thought about going with those, but reading the specs on the PS2 compared to the pilot sport all seasons made me want to choose the ps2's. when you say these tires shouldn't be driven in the winter do you mean on snow? or they shouldn't be driven in the cold weather?? thanks.

does anyone know if it's ok for me to drive on the pilot sport 2nd eidtions (PS2) in the winter, but NOT in the snow? I was looking to drive on these tires on dry/wet pavements all year round except when there is snow.
Also, has anyone had any experience putting 20" wheels on a w220 s class? Do I just simply put them on or do I have to worry about rolling the fenders or rubbing? Thanks

bleh i just bent two of my rims (front left and front rear) the new 20s.....about a month old? UGH ill take pix soon
i hit a pothole and it sorta bent the lip of my rims

no i would not drive the Sport PS2's in winter in general (november through march?) they are not designed for low temps or snow and will deliver far less traction in those conditions. what spec is it that you felt the A/S didnt compare? theyre Y rated and should provide performance well beyond what youre likely to use. AND they can be driven in winter. there is also a new tire from continental in the same same size that is in the same class, but about half the price. ContiExtremeContact.

Nothing really told me not to get the all seasons, but for some reason I was more attracted to the PS2's over the other michelins. I don't see the problem with driving these in the winter tho? So long as I don't drive them in the snow. Do you know for a fact that I'll lose traction in the cold weather? Chances are I could put these on ebay since I havent driven on them and get the all season pilot sports, but I'm not sure if it's really necessary for me to even bother?

theyre called summer tires for a reason. you may think all tires are basically the same because they are just big inflated rubber rings your car rolls on. the fact is that there are huge differences between tires, especially summer/performance and winter. need more info check with Luke@tirerack in the wheel/tire/suspension section of MBWORLD. he'll probably recomend dedicated winter tires (whcich would require you swap wheels and tires) for the winter months. but if you want to keep the 20s on through the winter basically ur only option is the PS A/S.

true. though even if you dont drive your benz in the snow and you only drive when the roads are dry they will still provide less traction than all-season and especially winter tires because the tread compound isnt engineered for freezing tempuratures. therefore you will have nioticebly more wheelspin and such.
bottom line, if you wanna drive ur S in the winter get the appropriate tires.

well i already have these so i'll keep them for the time being. if i feel that the conditions are unbearable, then i'll have to do something about getting different tires. besides, i wont be driving it like a race car either..
