Automatic wiper problem

I'm looking to try and fix my wiper problem. 2006 S500. What it does: In the automatic mode if it is a light rain I turn it on and it works as it should at first. Many times after a length of time during light rain it goes into slow speed and stays there even though there is no rain at that moment. Other times if the rain is light but steady it will be in the slow speed and then go to high speed and stay in high speed even though the rain is not very heavy. Occasionally it works right. So before I take it to the stealership I was considering changing the sensor behind the mirror. $122 with shipping for an OEM MB part on eBay. Before that I'm going to try the clean the windshield thing. My 2006 S500 only has 40,000 miles on it. The windshield certainly looks clean.

Thanks
Rodney

I'd also be interested in the response. My auto wipers don't seem to be very intuitive.

Having done some searching the clean the windshield is the first thing to try. Some have had success replacing the sensor. The sensor has 4 LED's. I've read you can see them at night. Or take a picture at night with the flash off and they show in the picture. Engine has to be running I think. Maybe wiper switch on the auto setting??

When mine was still under the extended warranty the MB dealer did the recalibrate thing. Did not fix it though. Warranty ran out. I don't drive it enough and did not find out until the extended warranty had ran out. So I'm going to move past the recalibrate thing and maybe hope a new sensor (After I try a few other things first) fixes it.

There is a calibration procedure someplace for the rain sensor but I cant recall where. I've used it to calibrate the sensor before that worked. You have to spray the sensor with water at a certain point. It didn't need SDS if I recall.
If I remember, I'll post it.
Changing sensors is tricky to get right due to air bubbles and alignment. I would think carefully before assuming its the sensor or replacing it. The sensors come with factory glass pre-installed.
You could end up worse than when you started. You may need SDS (star diagnostics) to check the sensor).

When I was searching for info one guy said he replaced his sensor and it took about 10 minutes and it fixed his problem. Said it was easy as pie to replace.

very good. glad that worked out for him. Just so you know. Some glass installers will not install any rain sensor glass other than OEM because of the amount of failures in trying to move the old sensor on the glass onto new glass. New OEM glass with a MB comes with the sensor already placed in the correct location whereas after market glass does not have a sensor.
