2000 Mercedes S 430
Exclamation Shifting problem after changing transmission

I have a 2000 Mercedes S430 and recently had the transmission changed in it and since then it has or will not shift out of first gear(shift up or down) when speed increases. It is showing codes PO 743, 753, 758 and 763. After swapping used transmissions from exact years and models is there any new programming or synchronizing that needs to be done to remedy the no shifting? The person who changed the transmission has recently passed as well so I have to finish this job on my own or try and take it to another shop if it needs put on a special machine or something. Has anyone else ever had this problem after swapping transmissions on their 2000 Mercedes S430 or similar automobile?

Try resetting the transmission; It's some procedure that involves putting the car in position 2 and holding the gas pedal all the way down or something like that.

Otherwise; Yes, the transmission has to be coded to the car.

The resync procedure is as follows: Turn the key to position 2 just before starting the car. Press the accelerator all the way to the floor and hold it for about 15 seconds. With you foot on the gas pedal pressed to the floor, turn the car off. Now start the car normally without your foot on the gas pedal.

In all likelihood you will need to hook it up to a STAR machine.

Ibeforreal. Please tell us where you get your information about resetting a gearbox? Fit the used ecu as well to the vehicle. Or use your old valve body in the second hand box.

Russell I don't think the procedure I mentioned is going to fix his problem. That is used when you disconnect your battery. I was responding to Fried Chicken's question about the procedure.

The procedure I mentioned isn't going to fix James' problem.

the transmission module won t work because it s part of that vehicle you took it out from. once it gets programmed to that vehicle you cannot fit it to another vehicle.

are you sure it s not the module that was faulty in the first place? it s a common problem.

There is no such reset procedure. Yes the problem could well be your controller. On a 2000 model you can use the one from the donor car. It's not part of drive authorisation

Russell I beg to differ with your opinion. There is a procedure to reset the TCU and there are plenty of post on this procedure.

Ibeforreal, I had a look at your link thanks. But in the 25 years I have been working on MB electronic systems I have never come across this reset. Never have I seen it documented in Wis Das or tips. Would be interesting to find the source of this kind of info.

Rather than saying "there is no such reset procedure" it would be much more easier to say that I personally have never seen it before. Part of this forum is to learn and help others and not discredit them. I have seen things in WIS that are documented one way that have not always been the best way. Their advice is a "recommended way" that they know works. Quite often there are alternative ways to accomplish the same task.

As far as the source of such procedures it comes from folks like you and me who have tried and proven that it works.

comeon guys: the TCU I don't believe is part of the Drive Authorization System, but, you may have to clear it of all trouble codes via SDS.

I agree, maybe that's part of the orginal problem.

Good Luck!

Correct it's not part of drive authorisation. Ibeforreal I will do a test and read out all the up and down shift adaption values. Then I will do a "reset" as you describe and read out the adaption again and will let you know the results.

Ok I did the so called reset procedure using the throttle pedal on a EGS52 system. Absolutely no change to adaption data. .
