2003 S600 v12TT Coil Pack question

Looking at a 02 V12TT S600 today that does not have maintenance records. I know the coil pack and igniter are big money repairs. Is there any way to visually confirm that the coil packs have been replaced with the "new and improved" unit? Thank you!!!

Why bother??

Most coil packs still work fine after 12 - 14 years.

The red silicone inserts in the coil tubes can give problems, but they should be replaced on every plug change.

If no misfire codes, leave them alone.

I have spare coil packs, but never needed them (so far).

from what I have read, the original ones were a slightly different design that tend to break and fail, whereas the newer "revised" units are much more robust. Considering they are $800 a side, I figure I would prefer if they had been replaced. That would be an added value item for me as a buyer,. That's why I'm asking....

Edit: I see you drive an 02... that's probably why your response was the way that it was... I am looking at a US-spec 03 v12TT car...

The coil packs did not change significantly over the years; I think MB for a long time did not really address the so called "coil pack" issues and just simply pushed the issue down to the supplier.

MB just always at the dealer said to change the pack, without that often NOT fixing the problem.

Search more on these forums for Hoaz excellent contributions.

Again, if you don't have a problem, leave it alone (like myself).
