1999 s500 starting issues
Hi all this is my 1st post,I was wondering if anyone can help me
After spending a lot of money trying to solve an intermittent start problem with no luck i was hoping someone may have some ideas . It will only fault on the 1st start of the day but not very day.Cold mornings will cause it to fault but not all the time.
What happens is that the key will turn in the ignition but wont turn the the starter motor, when it does finally fire the stater motor it spins over at the normal speed
Ive replaced the battery twice but that didn't change anything.
I've been told it could be the key or the ignition but would it not fault at other times as well as the 1st start. It will start after turning the key on and off between 3 and 10 times.Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers Kevin

If you won't spend the money to properly diagnose the problem then my WAG is the fault is within one of the stating elements---the key--the ignition module--the starting relay--the starter--I have excluded the battery because you wasted your money and changed the battery twice!!
Why random---ask the chaplain!!

I have spent lot money with my local Mercedes agent on diagnoses but unfortunately they haven't been able find the problem and have suggested I replace the ignition and the key at $3100 in parts I was looking for a 2nd opinion.Again thanks for taking the time to help me out

If you only have 1 key, get a 2nd one.
Silly to only have one in the first place.
Once you have 2nd key, easy enough to diagnose if 1st key is going bad. and much cheaper than buying a new EIS you don't need.

On a vehicle like the W220, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that every problem is complicated and probably computer-related.
While it is not certain to be the problem, worn and sticking starter brushes have been causing intermittent starter operation for nearly a hundred years now - and will still cause the problem many, many more times, with no trouble code ever being set...

As a matter of fact, this is a VERY WELL KNOWN issue, documented in other forums here and all over the Internet. Unfortunately, there are no clear answers - even the dealership admitted they are aware of the issue but offer no solutions. It isn't too much to ask that a $600 key actually start the car, or is it just me?
In my case, I have found that if I insert the key and leave it alone while I close the door, fasten the seatbelt and allow the steering wheel to do its thing and the message telling me that my airmatic system needs attention (it will always need attention as it was disabled/removed) before I turn the key, it works every time. I have only had this problem twice since I realized this and both times I was in a rush and just turned the key immediately.
Here is a link with some ideas that might help.

There are plenty of other threads in other forums here. As an added bonus, the responses on the other forums are not condescending and rude!
