So, if I understand, your brake lights are illuminated, even when none of the tail lights are supposed to be illuminated. If it's on both sides and on the rear center high mount, then I would agree it sounds like the brake switch. If it's only one of the lights, I'd be inclined to say it's corrosion of the wires or housing. As whenever anything electrical comes up, make sure all of your drains are working properly and that water isn't getting to places it's not supposed to be.

I think your rear electronics may be water damaged , lights staying on is a classic symptom

Check rear SAM under rear seat for dampness

To lift the rear seat cushion, release the locks at the bottom of each forward corner and lift hard.

We see this all the time on W215/W220 models - Brake lamps are on anytime the key is in position '2' - In STAR/Xentry, it's easy to check the operational status of the brake lamp switch. It is also easy to check the signal status of the Rear SAM. In almost every case, we replace the ESP/PML/BAS control unit and the problem is solved. Leave the key on for 15 minutes. The ESP/PML/BAs control unit will be hot to the touch with this type of failure...

Where is the ESP/PML/BAS control unit on a 2002 CL500? My problem is that the drivers side stop lights stay on with the key out of the ignition.

are you sure you didn’t turn your headlight switch all the way to the left ? Turning it all the way to the left, which is off for many cars , on Mercedes it turns on drivers side stop light (for parking on narrow European streets so cars don’t hit you )

the headlight switch needs to be straight up and down to turn the lights off

I plan on checking the rear SAM today. I pulled the connectors off the brake switch yesterday, sprayed both sides with electronic cleaner and plugged them back in. Seems like it solved the drivers side taillight problem, but the middle brake light still stays on. Ironically, after cleaning the brake light contacts, everything worked great, i.e., the drivers mirror turn signal indicator fully lite and worked, all of the "check taillight, license plate lights, etc" messages on the dash disappeared. I plan on checking the rear SAM today.
