auto upshift?

hey all,
curious...does touch-shift automatically shift when you hit redline?

like when i leave it in 1st and let it hit redline, will it upshift automatically for me?

I was using touch-shift on the highway today and I didn't want to try it, fearing that I might damage something :p but I did let it rip to about 5k RPM's then shift it myself. DAMN do those gears go LONG. 1st gear got me to about 50mph at 5,000 RPM's

Thanks!

I don't know! Just replying to help you out a bit. I think it does according a post I read in the S55 forum. I can't remember which post. Why don't you give it a try. Remember, Mercedes-Benz engines are designed for prolonged high RPM's.
Oh and yes, I was scared to rev the 600SEL to the redline ofr a while but got used to it! Go ahead!

I've tried it and it upshifts on SLs. I've not tried it in my S, but I'd bet it works the same way.

so there's no real danger of letting it redline once in a while? I know that MB engines are strong and built rock solid...

No not really, might wear the transmission more than the engine. I redline my Lexus almost daily and it runs like new.

when shifting manually, if you don't up-shift, you will hit the rev-limiter. hits like a brick wall. it will not up-shift automatically.

A bucket on wheels
it WILL upshift...the tranny is designed to upshift when it hits redline to prevent any engine damage. When you want to drag race i suggest to leave it in 1st and just let it go, dont upshift...i do it all the time in my c coupe(it was damaged in an accident and its leased so i couldn't give a damn about the car) and ti drives fine.

The computer will upshift for you if you hit redline on the w220. This is actually a good thing as redline comes pretty fast in 1st gear. If you leave it in 1st, it will upshift all the way up to 4th gear each time hitting redline.

i beg to differ....i have a 2000 s class and it WILL NOT upshift when it hits redline...the motor hits the rev-limiter...

Well, I think you should try it GDawg! In the event of the transmission not shifting, the rev limiter will protect the engine. In the 600SEL and all other automatic transmissions, I had this thing about the car shifting on its own when approaching the redline. One night i said "heck i'm gonna go for it." The 600SEL shifts after, E500 (aunt's old car) after and my moms Villager shifts at 5200RPM instead of the 5850RPM redline!
Go to the W126 S class forum and the RPM @ 60MPH thread.
