Any S500 Guard owners?

The S500 Guard edition (bulletproof) must be one of the rarest modern-day Benzes. I've never seen one before, does anybody have one or ever seen one in person?

If I told you I'd have to kill you :)

We had one in our showroom for well over a year and never had one serious buyer! I think our store ended up registering it under our companies name and then exported it out of the country. I had the chance to drive it and it was not pleasant. The front windshield would make you see double and I would get sick after about 5 mins, not a very fun experience!

i would think the S guard would be more popular in other countries than the U.S.

A lot of government's overseas use S-Classes (w140 and w220) guard editions for their presidents, PM's, escorts, etc. I haven't seen many MB's in use in the U.S. for government use...

DMI+RY 05-23-2004 05:13 PM

I've seen one almost a year ago...
Actually I was driving one for a couple of days (that's my friend's car - V12)
It was in Moscow though... Its much more popular in Europe - I agree...

That baby is VERY heavy!
V12 feels like S430 IMO :)

i saw a guard last summer downtown chicago, i only knew cuz of the rims and the windows were cracked and u could totally tell it was the thick glass

IluvS500 05-23-2004 10:38 PM

another way to tell is they have a three person bench in the backseat but no middle headrest

Good point, I don't believe I've ever seen a 220 without a sunroof.

GDawgC220 05-23-2004 10:48 PM

actually, now that i think of it, there was a S500 guard at my dealer that I go to. It was in the showroom. I sat in it and it feels exactly the same, just no sunroof.

the doors were a little heavier, as i thought they should be because of the extra metal protection :p

they also have different rims i believe...

IluvS500 05-23-2004 10:52 PM

the rims are like the standard 03 rims, i always have overlooked the sunroof though....

DMI+RY 05-24-2004 12:05 AM

You not going to notice much on armored car. Especially on Guard version of W220.
The windows glass is different - thicker, and the doors are heavier, no sunroof as well... I believe they do either level 3 or level 4 protection.

Well, I was sort of involved in supplying armored cars for overseas clients.
The best protection level available was level 6 or B6 (different makers make diff. labeling), but even then, using the best available level of protection the armored car including Guard is capable of holding bullets from 7.62 NATO, 147 Grain M80 ball, AK-74. Anything else with more intensive firepower than bullets - like RPG-7 or Stinger or Mortar - will penetrate armor :X no matter how much you pay - your better investment is M1A1 Abrams :tyson:

I have friends who live in Sao Paulo who are driven in an S600 Guard, they have had the armouring tested on three occassions, once by a ten year old boy with a small handgun. Worth every penny if you live in that kind of a city. Apparently the repair bills cost an absolute fortune.

dave,
I have seen a used 2002 S500 guard at my dealer. Tires were like ULTRA XL load rated and it had the 17 inch 5 spoke double spoke wheels that come on the 2000-2002 CL500 non sport. The doors are ultra heavy and do not have the assisted door closing. Back seat had a telephone cradle and looked very presidential. Tires were also bald on the outside edges.

Do you get along with the salesmen at your dealer? One of them could tell you who drove that car. Why was it there for such a short time, was it sold or did they take it to the auction?

Hello,

We have had many. Currently I drive or am driven in a S500 Guard. My father`s daily is also an S 500 Guard. My brother had a E 430 Guard that we just sold and we have a 1995 S 600 Guard B6/B7 for sale that was over $580,000 when new. We bought it used. We also have a Level B4 Ml63 AMG. They are great cars! The guards are probably the best quality armored vehicles in the world and there are many here in Mexico City.

Hi moe,

is your S 500 Guard B4 or B6 level protection (European norms)?

Is there a market for used W 140 S 600 Guard B6/B7 in Mexico (city?)

THX and best regards,

atw24

We have 2 W220 S 500 Guard B4 and a W140 S 600 Guard B6. About two years back we also had a W220 S 600 Guard B6/B7 that we sold. Yes, there is a market for a used W140 S 600 B6/B7, we currently have one.

I have a few friends in Brazil that have armored cars - you really do need it because all the violence, kidnappings, etc. They don't have an Guard/Mercedes though - mostly regular cars like Jeeps that get armor.

I am glad I live in New York - where the only protection you need is against the potholes in the winter because of the snow! We take that protection for granted, but in a lot of countries people really aren't as comfortable or safe outside especially with a nicer car.

THX for your answer,

since you had both w 220 s 600 b6 and w 140 s 600 b6,

which one do you think is better made and easier to run (repair wise)?

side question: Was the w 220 a facelift model (with biturbo engine)?

Thanks in advance
