Diesel particulate filter S320cdiL
I’m in a bit of a situation here. I bought a 2005 S320cdiL in March of this year with the intention of using it all year round but ran into a big problem.
The MOT testing rules changed in May 2018 in the U.K. to include the particulate filter and any evidence of tampering of such, and as I was in the middle of fixing a few things on the car I thought I’d get under and have a look. To my non surprise (given the amount of bodging I’d already found) the particulate filter had welding on it, this is an immediate fail under the new rules, so I took it and the cat off to check them out and found that both had been gutted of their contents.
I set about calling the local dealerships and then the further afield dealerships and they all told me that Mercedes do not supply the particulate filter for my model any more, as they only need to supply parts for cars for 10 years and mine was just outside of that - unbelievable. So I started calling the breakers and as my car is the facelift model, and a fairly short production run, they don’t have any - anywhere in the U.K.
So I’m calling out to my fellow Mercedes owners anywhere in the world to see if they might know where I may be able to source a diesel particulate filter and a catalytic converter for a facelifted W220 S320cdiL be it new items or off a vehicle broken for spares.
Cheers
I haven’t had a thorough look but it appears that the S320cdi is sufficiently different to make fitting another models dpf and cat impossible.
Its really boiling my p**s this situation. I contacted MB head office and told them the situation and I could almost feel them patting my head saying ‘ there there it’ll be alright but we don’t make them anymore ‘.
I get the feeling that eBay will probably be my best bet but how long it will take is anyone’s guess, and I need it now unfortunately. I was just hoping that reaching out to the wider world might result in someone knowing someone who is breaking a 2003 to 2005 facelift S320cdi.
Many thanks for your reply Wally.
Regards

In similar cases in the USA, most states, even the stringent ones like California, have lists of approved after-market replacements for required parts. Does the MoT not have any system to help in such cases?
I’ve looked into the aftermarket scene but as it was a short run there aren’t any who are prepared to spend a whole load of cash on tooling up to produce something that may only sell a couple of examples. I’ll look into grinding down the welds to see if I can make them less conspicuous, it’s just that the emissions tests that they do now may prove my downfall as my cat and dpf are empty.
To be honest I was looking at getting a ‘basic’ dpf and digging my mig welder out to see if I could make it fit by cutting the bits I need from my old one and persuading them to go together. I’ll do some homework on sizes etc to see what’s available.
Cheers
