Another S600 coil question...

2003 S600 - 57K miles. Car is used sparingly. Took it out today, and after a stop started rough idling - CEL. Also running hot (normally at 80C would climb to 100C at traffic lights, come back down when driving). My OBD II scanner reads P0300, P0301 and P0307 (multiple cyl misfires, cyl 1 and cyl 7 misfires). Orig thinking it was a coil problem, the fact that cyl 1 and cyl 7 are on separate coils tells me its something else. ECU?

Note that at least 1 of the coils was changed a couple of year ago (probably 1-2000 miles ago, at most). I don't remember which one, and not sure if both were done (I'll need to look for the paperwork).

Appreciate input/comments.
Thanks

If one of the coils is relatively new, and now both coils have a misfire, I would suspect the Voltage Transformer. I presume that you had the plugs done at that time? They're only good for 60,000 miles in the S600.

My recommendation: http://www.v12icpack.com/

Clark is a great guy and will send you a "loaner" Voltage Transformer that you can plug in (10 minute job) to your car. If the problem clears up, keep it, send him your old one and pay him for the rebuild. Visit his site, he'll walk you through troubleshooting and you'll see the option to get a loaner.

Yes - plugs were done. I'm having a hard time understanding how it could be the coils - both going at the same time? I'll have to do a little research on the voltage transformer - I appreciate the suggestion.

Are there any other suggestions?

I don't think it's the coils, either.

Both coils are fed by the voltage transformer. If it goes bad, you get bad voltage to the coils, and you get multiple misfires on both coils. It's not uncommon for them to go bad. Electronic circuit board in the valley between cylinders, soaking in high heat all the time...

Clark's site, in addition to offering services and parts, is an education. I would spend some time on it. Watch the Youtube videos.

Which plugs did you fit?

I'll have to look for the pwk from the work my Indie did - but I'm sure I would have went for something high quality (e.g. Bosch or NGK).

I would only fit MB plugs, or the NGK IFR6QG. NGK supplies the plugs to MB. So, they are the same, and you can get a set of 24 plugs for about $275 if you shop on line, while the MB plugs will set you back closer to $450 for a set of 24. While I use Bosch components with confidence in other applications, because the coils on this engine are a weak spot, and plug gap is critical, I don't think I would want Bosch...

However, that's my preference. Too soon to tell if plugs are an issue in your case.

I would try out one of Clark's VTs, and see what you get from that.

I pulled the transformer today, and emailed Clark. Thanks for the recommendation - he was incredibly helpful and very honest, and agreed with my view that it likely was not the transformer since I am getting misfires on both sides. So... I am back to square one. Any suggestions?

BTW - for those that haven't been there - Clark's site is awesome!
