Automatic headlights

Hello everyone,
I’m new to the group and a first time MB owner so forgive if this sounds like a stupid question. All the lights come on when the car is running. Is this normal? Or is there some sort of procedure to deactivate this feature? I know DRL are normal and I’m fine with that but my headlight switch basically is only used to turn on/off front and rear fog lights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 2001 S500

On my 2003 S430, the light switch has positions for auto, side lights, headlights and side lights, and headlights/side lights/fog lights.

Do you have the owners manual? You really need one...

If you don't have the manual, MBUSA has it online at https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=h...l%2F2001_s.pdf

It is a very large file - about 500 pages!

Depends on the model year. Older models before 2002/03 have no "Auto" position in the light switch, but it can be set to automatic/manual/always on in the car settings menus

Thanks for help but when the car is off I have no problem controlling the lights in any position but when the car is running all the lights come on when it should only be the DRL. I went through the menu like I saw on YouTube but I don’t have Constant,AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL option.

Select settings (left lower steering wheel button) select headlights (left upper steering wheel button) then you'll find the 3 options "manual. Automatic and constant". Select the mode you want by pushing the +/- button (right upper steering wheel button)

I don’t have that option. I can only adjust the delay of the headlights and interior lights

I’m not sure if there’s a difference between a US and Canadian car as far as that option goes. I’m learning something new about this car everyday

Are you located in Canada or is the car originating from there? In this case it's not a bug, it's a feature. In the year 2001 the bulb DLR was realized just by switch on the lights, as soon the car is started.

From Canada and the car also. So that probably explains it. I wonder if it’s something I can get turned off by a technician. Thanks for your help

With changing a country code by star diagnosis it might be possible, but due to the highway safety regulations, it could be illegal changing the code, and you may loose the license to operate and register the car. Attached pictures of the European menue
