m275 oil leaks and cures
I have a 2004 S600 with about 129K miles and the valve cover gaskets were replaced. The exterior of the motor was not cleaned afterwards, but a persistent oil leak suggests that the diagnosis of just valve cover gaskets was not the only culprit. There are competent mechanics out there, but m275 experts appear lacking. Of course, I wish to solve this once and for all without multiple shop visits at significant costs and certainly without "significant discussions" with my wife!
Without a lift and squinting my eyes, I can see where possible issues are oil pan gasket or possibly the rear main seal. Are there other possibilities I might have missed? I would like to clean the grease off the engine and get a better assessment, but I am certainly wary of degreaser/water and possible damage to components.
If the rear main seal is the offender, is there anything else that could/should be done once the transmission is pulled? Transmission mount has been replaced and flex discs are okay for now.
If oil pan gasket is the (other?) offender, are there components more easily accessible that could/should be replaced when replacing the gasket?
