Question S500 - What is the purpose of this part?

Hi All,

Recently I had issue with shifter control of my 2005 S500 (W220). The issue is not showing the position of gear the shifter is in place. I had to disassemble to re-solder those 4 optical diode TCPT1200. This seems to common issue with solder joints.

While putting it all together I notice a small pin is to be inserted in the hole of outer case. See picture below;

What I noticed is that it is loosely move around. Is this pin supposed to be spring loaded from inside? What is the purpose of this pin?

If I could imagine, this pin supposed to be spring loaded (from inside) and always pushing the lever which pivots and tracks the shifter shaft. Is that correct? However I did not notice any spring was there earlier. I swear I did not loose it.

Thanks for any pointers.
