Question Soft Close and Door Lock Not Working

The soft close has not worked on my 2000 S500 driver's door for about two years. However, the soft close works on the other three doors, and the door locks on all four doors have worked fine for years, so I never bothered to fix it. I really don't care about the soft close feature. Yesterday, the door lock on the driver's door stopped working as well, but the soft close and door locks on the other three doors continue to work fine. I can lock/unlock the driver's door with the "blade" mechanical key, but it is a bit of a nuisance. Again, I am getting good vacuum pressure to all the other doors. I have a mechanic who will do the work if I buy the correct part(s). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

(Repeated for those who don't read both forums.)

There are dozens of threads on the Forum on this subject. Start by going to the thread whose title includes "...START HERE..." in the stickies (the blue area) at the top of the first page.

Basically, there are two pneumatic actuators built into each door look assembly (and the trunk latch assembly). These are plastic housings containing a rubber diaphragm, and failure of the plastic housing is the most common problem.

On the door lock assemblies on my 2003 W220s, the soft-close actuator hangs down below the assembly, and can be repaired. Unfortunately, the door lock/unlock actuator is buried deep inside the assembly, and I could find no practical way to disassemble the lock assembly. Each of the four lock assemblies are unique, so you will need a lock assembly for the 2000 W220 left front door. Factory part only - the installation is expensive enough that you do not want to cheap out on an unknown assembly.

Research on-line will give you the part number, and will give you numerous vendors (many of them individual Mercedes Benz dealers, some cooperative dealer groups, some independent parts vendors). Research here can save some money. The lock assembly will not be cheap.

Installing it will also not be cheap. I hope that the mechanic is either very experienced, or is willing to do some serious research on how to do the job. It isn't simple.

Good luck!
