S430 dies while driving, starts again after 30 min.

Our 2006 S430 dies while driving, just cuts out, no warning. When we try it, all lights come on, but starter won’t engage (no clicks, nothing). After sitting on the road for about 20 minutes, it will start up, no problem, but will repeat after a few minutes of driving. Took it to our local trusted Mercedes guy. He found nothing in the diagnostic, but changed out a crank sensor? Still had same problem. He then ran diagnostic again, said he cleared out hundreds of codes, and car had no problems for about a month. Now it’s back doing the same thing again.
Any thoughts?

Usually when you have lots of unrelated codes it indicates something electrical - perhaps oil in the pins of the ecu or a bad wiring harness/plug somewhere which would explain intermittent functionality

what were all the codes? The theme of the codes?

Its the crankshaft position sensor. Quite cheap and extremely common failure. It starts because the sensor itself has cooled down.

I don’t know what the codes were, but will mention this to him as a possibility.

Thanks, if I’m not mistaken I think that’s what he replaced. Can those sensors fail again in a short time?

Failure of the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) does not stop the starter from actuating - you have a different intermittent problem. The most common CPS failure results in repeated starter operation but no engine start when the engine is hot.

yes, I have changed sensors and they have been bad out the box. Unfortunately people change and return them and someone puts them back in stock as new stock so the next person is screwed. Just read that it’s not turning over though. More than likely a bad solder in the EIS.
