Power steering went out randomly

hello,

I was driving my 2005 s500, and i had to make a sharp turn so i turn my wheel all the way to the left and when i try to turn it back it wont turn and i lost the powersteering. I have no idea what happened. no fluid was lost, the fluid is still there. The power steering was working fine before that aswell. what do i do first?

Mercedes
Most likely an electrical issue as even though it’s hydraulic power steering the electrical faults make it stiff

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot it?

"...when i try to turn it back it wont turn..."

Do you really mean this? That the steering is locked up?

When you lose power steering for any reason, you can still steer the car, it is just much more difficult, especially at low speeds. If the steering actually locked, that is a very different problem.

If you can turn the wheel, even with difficulty - is it hard to turn in both directions? If so, one possibility is a missing or slipping serpentine belt, possibly due to a failing tensioner..

There was metal shavings in the power steering fluid, and had to get a new rack and pump…

I really hope you replaced the power steering pump radiator, fluid filter, all the lines too and cleaned out the resevoir properly, otherwise you will end up with the same mess.

Yes, I had a mechanic do it.
