2003 CLK 320 Coupe
S55 Transmission shifting
Hi All,
Tried this post on the S55 board but maybe other W220 owners have experienced the same problem.
I recently got a chance to drive a 2003 S55 that belongs to one of the VPs in the company I work for. He had been describing a transmission problem (5 speed) for a while what I later experienced myself when I drove the car. During an acceleration then level out then accelerate again scenario there is a "bump and go" feel in the first shift during the second acceleration that feels like someone who let the clutch on a little hard on a manual car. Anybody having a similar problem with their S55 or other W220?
Thanks all

There ain't no clutch, or clutch plate, on an S55.
I just drove an S55 and I certainly wish it had a real clutch. I love the super-fast shifts of the BMW SMG or the Ferrari F1. But, then again, the S55 shifts a lot more smoothly. Or at least it should.
Sorry, Sleeper, but I haven't experienced what you're describing. I wish I could help.

Get the ATF fluid and filter changed, Im not sure what spec fluid that thing uses, use a good full synth fluid. (you may have to use Mercedes prop. fluid)
if problems continue, good 10$ fix. go to your Local car parts shop and grab a bottle of Lucas Automatic Transmission Fix (www.lucasoil.com). follow the instructions, that should fix your problem.

MBWorld Fanatic!
If its is a jerk that occurs during the pull in first gear it is the supercharger clutch engaging once the car sees the needed level of load. It can occur in first second or third gears.
I have 2 55k's and both have this issue and it is totally normal. If the issue is more of a bang durring the shift it self then this is not the issue. The Tq converter does lock up at some point and this can cause a lurch or bang when being driven in a slow fashion.
Go look in the S55 forum for further help.
