The buttons are too japanese car looking... like on Lexus or Acura... that silverish, flast plastic look... I didn't like it on the 300ZX back in the 80's, and I don't like it now.
I used to admire German design and ergonomics, but now they've turned into Acura/Lincoln nockoffs... sad day.
The gizmo factor is cool, but it could have easily been done with more taste.

I just can't stop staring at the lady's fingers up top.
You think the most hi-tech car company on the planet could get a better hand model.....
Imagine that ugly thing wrapped around your......Benz.

Why all the bashing...I like the outside and the inside of the new S! Wonder where all these "expert car designers" bashing the car got their degrees in car design?

Actually, all those buttons are made out of metal.
metallic switches using a similar material to the seat controls in new Porsches, something Mercedes calls galvanized composite. It looks shiny, but it feels no more substantial than plastic.

The consumer ("non-expert car designers") makes the final buying decisions.

it does look like it's a completely digital speedo meant to appear to be analog. Boo! This will suck in direct sun light.

It's very obvious in this picture that the tach is an actual dial, but you can see the edge of the LCD for the speedometer and nav.

Actually, when I drove one of the mules of this car, the there was no degredation in direct sunlight. It was just fine. The only thing you could detect was that there were real gages next to the screen, that's it.
By the way, do you guys know that this car has a pc card slot under the CD chager? How cool is that?!!

I didn't like the first interior pictures of the new S, but its starting to look better and better. I think when you see the car in person it will be amazing. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the i-drive, its really not that hard to use and it eliminated the need for 100's of buttons.
The engineers over at Mercedes aren't stupid, usually it takes some time to get used to new designs and eventually they will make our current S-Class look old and outdated.

i was just lookin arnd when i saw this pic:

and this one:

clearly then the speedo, along with the gear indicator is gonna b an LCD screen. the fuel, temp, and rev are real instruments.
this is quite interesting: hv never seen such an arrangement before! i wonder if you can switch between the two screens i.e. have the speedo on the COMAND screen and the COMAND right in front of you, if you wish.
look at the third button on the left of the COMAND screen, just above the brightness control: it looks like something to switch screens, doesn't it?

the interior does look closer to a BMW than I've seen before, but i think it may feel more like a Benz when we get to see them on the showroom floor. i've been using iDrive in my wife's 745i and i have to say - folks that find it hard to deal with are likely technology shy - it isn't hard to master - but it does have too many steps to get to different operations - kinda like some Microsoft products.

Please man, check the interior of my X5 and tell me that has too many buttons. What more do you need in that car that you need to warrent such a piece of **** like iDrive, and worse, this Mercedes thing... has TOO MANY ****ING BUTTONS.
I don't care if I can blow up the car in front of me, I don't need that many god damned buttons. They need to learn how to design interiors properly and integrate functions correctly in a user friendly manner.
