I'm waiting for someone to hack the COMAND system that'll allow a DVD to be played thru COMAND, either on the center screen, or in the speedo screen. Parked, of course.

Not yet. I posed the question to an MBUSA regional manager a month or so ago and he said that it will be a delayed option for US vehicles to be available later this year. The MB UK site has details of what to expect:

http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/cont...tics.0007.html

The online manual available for the S:

http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/e/cars...iebsanleitung/

has a section on the RSE system where you can learn a lot more.

Just so we don't get hopes/expectations up too high, there are a few potential downsides.

- It will be pricey, something like $5K-$6K according to the rep I spoke with. The reason is because rather than just using an alternate headrest with the lcd display built-in, the entire seat back is different to accommodate the lcd. By the way, the lcds are 8" each vs the standard 6.5" for headrest mounted displays which may explain why they couldn't just go the inset in the headrest route.

- From the description and the user manual detail, it appears that it's a single disc player only. It's mounted in the rear armrest along with the playback controls. There could be some separate option for a DVD changer in the trunk or a way to use the in-dash DVD changer to feed the screens, but I haven't seen it. That rear armrest also has 2 aux A/V inputs though for separate sources.

- Not 100% sure on this one, but you may not be able to control the RSE system from the COMAND controls up front. Why would you want to do this? If you have kids too young to use the controls themselves, it's nice to be able to start the system for them up front. I can do this now in my wife's Range Rover Sport and it makes the system a lot more useful to keep them occupied, especially on longer trips.

From the pics,

in the German Owners Online Manual, it looks exactly like the system already in the R. with fancier controls in the center armrest, of course.

In the UK the rear seat entertainment system is £3,200.00 = $ 5,600.00.

Just to make you feel better the standard price for the W221 is £69,770.00 = $ 121,400.00 and the Long Wheel Base Model is £73,770.00 = $128,350.00.
And to make you feel even better our fuel is nearly £4.00 a Gallon = $ 7.00. Exchange Rate £1.74 to the $. What do you think ?

Regards,

Peter.

Unless I had kids, which I seriosly doubt I would have riding in my Benz. I would not spring for the rear entertainment center. I would definitely not let my freeloading friends watch a movie while I drive. And they are definitely not driving either. I can't afford a driver either, so NO SOUP or rear entertainment for anyone.

Nothing wrong with kids in an MB. Of course, now that mom has an RRS with RSE, my S55 isn't as fun for them as it used to be. After seeing how much it helps keep them calm even in heavy traffic, RSE is a must have for me going forward.

Couldn't agree more. For me, this is a must have as I envision using the S for long trips with the kids.

Does anyone know approx. when this feaure will be introduced in the U.S.?
