S320 CDI vs S350

Hi i am new on this forum. Hello to everyone
My questions are simple

Some decision to be done on S350 or S320 CDI

two cars same color obsidan black and interior is sand. Their options are nearly same both have keyless go, etc etc. No complaints.
I saw the technical data performance both cars are nearly same. Is there a big difference to 235hp diesel to 272hp gas.

I always look the diesel cars with suspect but i dunno if there is a huge difference on fuel consumption between s320cdi vs s350.

Anyone expeirence of these cars can you give me +- points of each.

Regards

I would always go with the diesel. I prefer its characteristics in terms of torque and low end urge. I have not driven either of the S Classes, but certainly in the E, that is what I would do.

I suppose you're best to try them and see. I imagine that the petrol will feel slightly smoother and more sophisticated and the diesel a little more aggresive and noisier (although the S will probably hide a lot of this).

Although no-one buys these cars for economy, I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised by how economic the diesel is, and also VERY IMPORTANT, how far it will go on a tank full (around 1000km for an E). I was only filling my car once a month!!

Good luck, it will be interesting to hear how you get on and what you think. At least you have the choice. The US does not get the S320CDI.

Hi again!

I just checked the figures for the cars, and the CDI has 540Nm of torque, compared with the S350's 350Nm, even the S500 only has 530Nm.

Although the CDI is 0-100 of 7.5 vs 7.3, in real life I am sure that you will find it feels a lot better because of that torque figure.

Talking

My father in law has the S320cdi that's his second and before he use to have S500's
He would never go back to a 500... but he drives a lot around 100000kilimeters per year.

gas consumption 8 liter per 100kilometer
top speed 235km/h
fantastic torque
much more smooth to drive.

and if you feel like missing power, the chips will give you more power on a CDI than on the 350 gas

That's what I did on my CLS 320cdi Brabus power chip +50hp

thanks i've been wondering about this too because my uncle in germany's going to buy an S320cdi. he's an aggressive driver but can't afford to move up to a 500, he says the torque is almost the same as the 500/550

can you give me the basics on chips? how do they affect fuel consumption? does the engine sound different/louder on a car with brabus chips?

Brabus chips didn't change anything from the outside or the noise. gas consumption one liter less per 100 kilometer.

much better torque start lower in the rpm and 20km/h higher top speed 260km/h with the cls320cdi now...

I remember seeing a link or the comparaison between the A8 3.0l, bmw 730i and the S350 but not in diesel.

The torque is maybe bigger but shorter on the S320cdi and the S500 is still faster. if the car is stock. not sure with a chips.

The new S320cdi is much better than the old one on all the points.

handling is great your much better seated, ESP woks great too. accelaration is amazing for a diesel, (I paid 1800€ for the CLS)
You almost can't hear any noise from the inside even while driving, but when your parked the engine is still noisy like the old version (worth when the engine is cold).

The inside quality finish is much better too

w221 S320 L cdi
Engine 320 cdi on W221 : Wow ! :)

Hello

I've just receive the brand new W221 S 320 cdi L and the engine is so COOL !!!

I had previously W220 v6 320 & then w220 320 cdi and of course the v6 320 was fast & instant responsive but torque of 320 cdi made him more easy to drive.

Now with the brand new 320 cdi, the power is stronger and it has lower noise.

Big difference between W221 S350 & S320 cdi would be the quicker response from the S350 has when I strongly accelerate with mine you have a small wait before the power arrive... but when it comes, WATCH OUT it comes strong !!!

Unfortunately for the consuption, the weight has increase (especially with the Long version 2000 kg) and you have to be very gentle with the accelerator to reach under 7 Litters even on highways... Medium is between 8 and 8.5 Litters. The older w220 S320 cdi was more economic

Nota: In France w220 '2000 had 88 litters and the w221 has now 90 litters.

I have the BMW 730d and I know very well the 320 CDI and Audi's 3.0 TDI. The Audi is the slowest car, Mercedes and BMW are quicker but the seven speed automatic gear box of the Mercedes makes the difference! So the Mercedes is quicker than the BMW but by a small margin!

Hello Bogdan,
I checked HP and weight, as we can see:

231hp

MB S320 CDI:

Audi 3.0tdi

hmmm

good question bogdan

the S320 CDI has 235HP and insane 540 NM. combined with the new 7G-Tronic the S320CDI is perfect for somebody who drives a lot.

The Benz has the big bonus cause of the new transmission.

Best thing would be: go go make a test drive.

According to relatively unreliable data, the E320CDI weighs 1740kg and the petrol S550 weighs 1984kg. So the performance of the S shouldn't be much worse than that of an E with three passengers (two big ones).

at my local dealer they don't have this model ( S320cdi ) so i can't make a test drive. Anyway I bought it and I believe I will like it very much. (it's on order, delivery date is August).

does your dealer has the C320 or E320 CDI with the 7G Tronic Transmission ?

If so, go go drive it. Why ? Cause its the same engine and nearly the same data.
missing a few HP and a few NM.

btw, your nick: where from ?
