Know at least 5 guys in Greenwich and SF getting both CL63/65 and 599 for daily commuter cars....and if MB bungles the steering wheel/paddles/leather finishes, I suspect these guys will not take deliv of their CL's and just go w/599 as the daily workhorse....after all, a CL63/65 costs roughly $50K (or more) in one-yr deprec cost....whereas, 599 costs $0.....no matter the mileage in either case....counter-intuitive oper costs, but those are the MB vs F economics in the US.....the all-important mkt where MB seeks to sell some 70% of global 65 produc and ?60%+ of global CL/S/SL63 produc......
Same situation here, have orders for both too(599 december production)and if the CL65 has that wimpy "housewife" steering wheel instead of a proper sport with paddles,I'm not taking it.They want that kind of $$ from me,they better follow suit of other high line manufacturers and offer some options.

This is interesting....

Wow, it appears that MBUSA has decided that the wood/leather steering wheels are standard for the S65. Maybe this is to keep it in line with the thought that since wood/leather is standard for the S600 it should also be standard for anything higher up like the S65. Well, I'm sure that anyone who really wants the AMG sports steering wheel with the paddle shifters can just buy it (the steering wheel rim and paddles less center airbag) in Europe and have it retrofitted to their car because the paddle shifters are also steering wheel based like the buttons and not seperate stationary mounted on the column items. Plus you get to keep your leather stitched airbag which only comes with the wood/leather steering wheel.

Would be interested to see pictures when you bring in the new fleet. 599, CL65 and Bentley Continental that is quite an outlay within a few months of one another. My friend is not able to get his 599 until later in 2007. So your Ferrari is Dec., when are the other two expected?

Just sent a detailed snail mail letter to Mr. Allan, describing my concerns re: CL63/65 steering wheel&paddles config/materials/steering precision...and highlighted 599 as my primary comparable (and ironically much cheaper oper cost) vehicle.

Hopefully, AMG understands that the US mkt, which buys prob 60% of global (rather high-margin) S/CL/SL AMGs, is increasingly populated by younger buyers who are more focused on tq/steering/chassis balance/brake pedal feel/excellent materials than the typical 600 buyer....

Gotta love competition.....F is now as reliable/comfortable for daily use as any MB/P.....however, 599 is likely far less crashworthy than a CL (or 997TT)......but given the egregious deprec costs of CL, will need to carefully consider the risk/reward trade-offs of 599 vs CL if MB bungles the CL's performance focus/quality of materials.....

Yes...in fact, cited the S65 wheel (or should I say a $50K more expensive "look-alike of grandpa's S600 wheel"???) as so disappointing as to cause me to write to MB re: upcoming CL in advance of launch.....

Fully intend to get a new CL65/63 upon launch (and eat the $50Kish annual deprec costs for new CL/yr), unless MB botches the dynamics/interior materials.....despite constructive feedback in advance re: their S65 debacle.....

Excellent. Thanks.

Please keep us posted as to any responses you may get. I'll do the same as well - although I really don't expect a response to my letter.

Talked to Rob and here is the scoop:
They ordered all '07 S65 with wood steering wheels based on input from customers of previus gen S65(had only leather)and attendees of AMG Challenge events.
The new S63(coming soon)will have standard AMG sport steering wheel (like the CLS63)with paddles and that wheel will be available in the S65 by request when ordering the car(not a retrofit).
The upcoming CL63/65 (second half of 2007) will have same sport steering wheel standard and performance package (delimited to 186,carbon brakes,LSD,different wheels, more alcantara in the interior),available as an option from the get go.
Sadly, this option will not be available on the S models.
Hope this answers our questions above in this thread.

Absent, many thx for the detailed feedback.

Is the CL63/65 a definitive 2H07 launch, not Spr07??? Seems like an incredible delay on a rather high-margin product....

Thanks for the info. Everything sounds good and correct IMO. The "63" models will be rolled out over the fall/winter and go on sale here next summer that is the usual Benz way. You'll have to go to Germany to experience one this year. I'd say next month's Paris autoshow will reveal all.
