can u manually downshift into first with the steering controls in C mode? It sort of makes sense but I love straightline acceleration and comfort airmatic so I wouldnt be too happy with the 1 setting either.

With my SL, I was able to uilize 1st gear in the "C" mode by manually shifting via the paddles. As soon as I left it in Drive, it went back to starting out in 2nd gear and shifting much earlier than in the "S" mode.
I am pretty sure that your S-class will work the same.

In my 07 SL (same engine/trans) I can manually shift down to 1st with the Comfort mode. I am sure yours will do the same.

No problem. Yeah, I miss the area but definitely not the traffic. 370 near Shady Grove use to be my "testing" grounds when I lived up there but now with King's farm developed and 75-80 raceway closed finding a nearby strip is pretty tough
