130 MPH speed limit on a S600 ??????

Why do they put a 130 MPH speed limiter on a S600 and don't mention it on the window sticker, like they do on the S550??

I thought the 155MPH limit on my 2006 S65 was too low. I just didn't want to spend the money on the Renntech ECU, the car was fast enough. Now I have no choice.

It's About Tires

It allows them to use tires like the Michelin Pilot Primacy, which are 99V rated. A V service rating is good for 149 MPH. A 155 MPH certification requires W or Y, which limits the available selection.

From my knowledge North American vehicles are limited to 130mph and some australian models too. And yes 155mph or 250km/h was a "gentleman's" agreement between the big 3 (BMW, Audi, Mercerdes) to restrict top speed in return for maintaining restriction free autobahns. Its a pity for anyone with the V8 or V12 if they have the roads and laws to allow faster driving....

Yes, my BMW 330 (ZHP) is limited to 155MPH and I've been there twice. (In a closed road).

Pretty sure they're all 155mph in Canada. Must be another U.S. thing.

My Volvo does 155mph every other weekend

sorry but what has the green party from here to do with your speed limit in the U.S.?? i can't follow that theory... since in germany you can drve as fast as you want on large parts of the high ways (autobahn)

i have driven the S550 myself to the end of the scale 260 ... km/h of course... you know we europeans are different

I had my S65 at 155 a few times, wish it would go faster. That was the whole point in buying a 600 or 65, otherwise why spend the extra money, you could just buy a 550

My US 2005 S600 went to 150 and it that was about all there was. So far my 2007 has been to 140 very easily.

I've gotten all of my cars past 130.. As far as I know all the non-amg cars are limited to 155ish.

Why do you think yours is limited to 130?

That sucks. Be carful with those ECU upgrades. You may stand voiding your warranty.

You can remove the limiter. I know several places in New York/New Jersey, I'm sure there are other places all around the U.S.

I'm not sure about the "green party" thing, but I did understand that Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and some manufactures were told (or all agreed) to limit their cars to 155MPH -- don't know how they came up with that number. When this went into effect the Lexus LS400 (1995 model - 1999 model) was limited at 156MPH, 1MPH faster than the competitors (I know you guys don't want to hear that).

ANYWAY...

cmcjo - The old S-Class was limited at 155 so I understand how you got to that speed, but the new one is limited at 130MPH so I'm not sure how/why yours reached 140MPH (if you've done no alterations to it), perhaps you speedometer was reading the actual speed wrong-?

While it is a little annoying, it does make a little sense. A huge sedan weighing as much as the S-Class does doing 155MPH is a deadly and legal weapon. One mistake from the driver, or another driver could lead to very serious consequences to all parties. While 130MPH isn't "so much better", it does make a difference. And when I was young (I know, I'm only 23 so that sounds so absurd), I was a little reckless and I'll say one thing: 130MPH is no joke! That's very fast and on regular roads that speed is unsustainable (unless on a 2 mile straight road). Just remember if your front tire goes out at that speed, no Mercedes-Benz pre-safe feature can save you.

Lastly, I wouldn't be surprised to see more car limiting their cars to lower speeds.

The manual says its limited to 130 and when it hit 130 it stopped accelerating...

ECU upgrades will not void your warranty. Some dealers are authorized installers for Renntech and other tuners. When I took my S55 in recently, my SA asked me about installing the upgrade. We talked openly about the HP increase and speed limiter removal.

.........my 05 G55 has a 130mph limit. I just figured they limited it to 130mph because its an SUV. I am totally fine with that. Now I wonder if if the 130mph limit is universal. It will be interesting to find out the top speed limit on additional non-modified newer MB's.

Remember if you do an ECU software enhancement that you will need to include the cost of a new set of tires that will take the higher speeds without deflating at higher speeds you are now able to reach! Ever seen a race where a tire goes at 170? Not pretty!

...........you quite right. Most folks probably get delimited just to say they are delimited. I don't know many that drive over 130mph. I suspect that the 130mph limit has been universally present in MB cars for a long time and no one knew, because no one drives fast.

Correct! My wife would have a dim view of me if we landed in jail just to say we had gone 155!!!!!! Would pre-safe activate if you hit the brakes to bring the car back down to 75mph after the radar was aquired? LOL

The autobahn was built for speed, no cell phone useage, no Starbucks, and you actually have to show your driver traing certificate for a license, You need speed rated tires and they check when they stop you or get your vehicle inspected ( no beaters). I was told they cant use re-treds on the autobahn!
