Not to be antagonistic here, but the fuel consumption in the road test was 9.6L per 100 KM. That equals 24.1 MPG. Nevada Jack got better than that in his S550 on his road trip when the car was brand new. Not enough better to make me want to go diesel.

MPG+ ROLFCOPTER
Combined is city and highway. Per whats posted Nevada did most of his purely highway. According to that link, S500 = US S550, 11.7 -12.0l/100km -> 19.6 - 20 mpg in combined

My 25.8 figure was the entire trip including city, idles, detour speeds, etc. I thought this was an amazing figure considering the average speed and including many long stints at 80+ mph.

'05 SL 55 Black/Black w/mods from Eurocharged/Kleemann/BuckheadImports
Question How much better do you all think Renntech or others could get it to?

How much better do you all think Renntech or Kleemann or Brabus or Carlsson or MKB could get that new 420 twin-turbo diesel power to? from 538 lb/ft to maybe 700?

Kleemann and Renntech probably will. If they could quicken the gear changes and put in an LSD, it would surely beat an S63 and keep up with the S600, right?

There is some hope now for this car to come to the U.S. as the S420 Bluetec since Mercedes is obviously going to sell the GL420 Blutec here at some point, my guess is in 2008.

sorry guys... a big luxury sedan does not match with a diesel motor... diesel sucks ...sound awful... the power is a lot, but only in the low rpm ... its a totally different feel...and i personally dislike it ...

and btw the 400cdi caused a lot of problems

Problems such as? I know they were the first aluminum CDI diesel block MB ever used. How have they fared? I'm curious...

People tout torque as if its the most important thing in the world, yet its peak horsepower, and only horsepower that is the most important number. I'd prefer a screaming high horsepower machine, myself. More fun to listen to and to drive quickly.

Yes, if you have a relatively light-weight/lower sedan where you can climb up the revs easily the hp is the most important number. When weight comes into play torque becomes more important as it means "the willingness to turn" things.

And I also agree a diesel does not suit a high-end car like S-Class.
