Navigation Update

Hi All

I spoke with my S.A at MB Manhattan. He said to hang tight - someone from MB headquarters / Maybach is coming to the dealership next week about the various upgrades, and he is going to ask him about putting the updated Navigation into MY2007 S Classes.

It may include BirdsEye View, etc.

Additionally - he will ask about the updated Headrests that were in the newer S Classes which seem to be better looking and more comfortable than the ones in the earlier builds.

Ill keep you guys posted!

Good to hear that. I wasn't even aware the headrests were different during the year. I am now wondering which headrests I have.

Ill try and find you a picture of the difference.

But early W221s had a basic headrest, and latter ones had a more "designed" version. Nicer, more comfortable, and more lux looking and feeling.

Do you mean the "luxury active headrests" like shown in this thread:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...light=headrest

Those have been an option for all W221 cars from the beginning of production, standard on some models, in Europe at least. Or is it actually something totally new?

Hi -

Yes - It appears to be the ones standard on the S600 - but I recall someone saying they were put as standard on the S550s after a certain build date.

Nevertheless - even if it were only avail. for S600s - it cant hurt to try and put them on the S550 if they are more comfortable.

My S.A is going to ask what has to go into changing them - if its an entire setup - or just a "pull off and switch" operation.

refer to this thread
post #6 in the second pic shows the headrests that were installed on S Classes standard, around the time that the satellite antenna was removed from the trunk as well.

On the headrests Chucky...I doubt they are interchangeable. The newer ones have the interactive safety feature which would mean more than just changing them out on an exchange.

I would be interested in what you can find out about the Navi changes and if they are only software/firmware related and not a change in the COMAND head unit. Will stay tuned for your input.

Well you would - you have the S600 - they were standard from DAY 1 on yours...... it seemed MB wanted to put a "lesser" one on the S550.... but then changed their mind later on.

Darn - well i will see what my S.A says. I really like the new looking headrests.... depending on the cost... ill see what i will do. Im not gonna change them if they $1000 or so... thats not worth it to me.

Will of course let you know about the software/firmware navi changes. I believe its just a "REFLASH" but again - i wont go to drastic measures like changing the comand head unit unless they pay for that.

How are you feeling ? You are doing alright?

It really wasn't that they wanted to put a "lesser" one on the 550. Apparently they only had so many units and as usual the priority went to the S600. Once they added the safety feature to the headrests, they made the line change to the new ones because they had to.

Doing fine...thanks.

I did assume the basic headrests would also have the active safety feature but now when I look at them they do not seem to have it.

What made me assume the opposite, was the dealer explaining that there is this tool to reset the head rests after an accident. The tool also can be found from my car, see the figure. But the headrests do not seem to have anything where the tool could be applied.

The new W211 all have active headrests standard, already before the W221 came. Perhaps MB first thought the pre-safe features being enough?

I did not find the tool to open the sun-roof. Perhaps it is in the trunk or would this head rest tool work for the sun-roof too? The manual still shows a different tool for the sun-roof.
