It can be better -- talk to Julio at Miami Chassis. He has done a few nice systems in the W221.

Reus system, they fly all over, I had the install done and it looks stealth and clear.

Yes, the current S550s have Harmon Kardon system instead of that low quality Bose system they had on the previous S-Class Models

come on... the factory system is blah... there is no impact at all, it is just a blah blah blah blah sound... and the reus system, i only heard one system and it was just a sub package, I was not impressed. the system needs to be gutted from the amp back...

no, i can honestly say i don't like it. It is a lifeless sound, don't worry though, that is how I think about all factory systems, however the Porsche Caymen with the add on bose woofer up front did catch my attention. The music sounds too processed and not natural. I feel it is like that because of space considerations and power considerations. now the 550 does sound better (dramatically) with a real woofer added to it, but it still has it short falls.

Also I feel that it isn't better or worse than any of the other newer vehicles out there, from caddy/bose to the mark levinsion system. i did see a vehicle show casing a B&O system, with motorized tweeters, but never heard it, though some were saying it is the new pinnacle of factory audio

but this is my opinion, I love music, I know what most instruments sound like live or in person, along with music being recorded. Which is why i have my opinion. can it be easy to change the system to make more of an impact, yes, but costly.
