2008 S65 Gone?

I noticed the S65 is omitted from the 2008 S-Class brochure. Is it gone?

I keep checking S65s on Ebay and I notice how so many S65s DO NOT have distronic on them. Why would this option be omitted on so many of these cars? I thought since S600s have them automatically that the S65 would follow suit.

Looking at the MBUSA website, I found the 2008 S65AMG in their photo samples and also in the list of AMG models. So apparently they will keep it for 2008.

It's not going anywhere.

Just saying...it would be cool to keep their top of the line exclusive...and not spam the market with a flood of S65s!

I'm thinking the price probably does a fine enough job of keeping the thing exclusive.

In fact, I think I've only seen two ever. Of course, some of you guys in CA probably have seen two or three in a parking lot at the same time.

Distronic and the -- shall we say? -- AMG driving style are not compatible. It's fine for a S600 where you want to get some work done in the back seat, but one of the great joys in driving an S65 is threading needles in moderate traffic. You're through before anyone saw the gap. You tend to want to be more engaged than cruise control implies. I didn't consider Distronic or Parktronic (I need to know how big my car is) plusses.

All the time. In my office complex there are 4 2007 S65's and 2 new S63's.

You confirmed a thought I already had about this issue. I think on an S600, the distronic is not effective beyond 130 mph or so. We Americans unfortunately can't experience that
I had the Renntech mod done and it sets the high speed limit to near 190 mph. My 600 of course only registers 160 mph. I wonder what happens to the analog speedometer once I exceed 160 since the speedo is only a monitor readout?? Also, when the speedo is set to display the speed in a digital readout form, what does that value do after exceeding 160? Would it continue to rise beyond 160?? I would love to answer my own questions but I'm not in a position at this time of my life to serve any jail time!

S65 AMG for MY08

The S65 AMG for MY08 is "order only". No "stock" cars are sent to the dealers. Vehicles are built based only on confirmed customer or dealer orders.

In Canada, there will be both S63 and S65. The S65 will have diamond pattern seats and door panels (like the Arnage T). The S 600 and S65 will have available parking guidance.

There's a big difference between order-only and not marketed. I suspect they're just trying to make the car's cachet more exclusive. A separate brochure would be one way. Not loading the pipeline with cars that drive down prices is another. The car is in a league of its own. They will not drop it.

I think M-B learned its lesson from the W220 S65.

Totally agree re: best uses of S65 in CA....but suspect actual uses (relevant for marketers) are often different...and the codgerly wood steering wheel/lack of paddleshifters of S65 simply isn't very AMG-like....hmmm....

Don't use cruise ctrl...but what is most useful re: Distronic is its link to BrakeAssist (on '07 and newer S/CL)...IMO, an important active safety advance....also, Distronic eliminates ugly Parktronic "bullet holes" in bumpers....and, esp in urban regions, where one often needs to parallel-park/tightly park car vs walls, etc, the functional Parktronic is invaluable (esp front sensors)....

Indeed....see '07 S65 often on SF Peninsula....my understanding is 90%+ of new 65s are $0 down leased for 2 yrs....most buyers fully expect car will depreciate 40% in first yr, no matter mileage.....but 2 yr leasing caps one's deprec exposure; is more efficient from a sales tx perspective (esp in CA)....and if one had 2 yr-leased an '07 S65 upon launch in June 06, could roll into another lease on a likely new-gen, high-tech, lighter, NA AMG V12 in mid-08.....

Interestingly, even in BeverlyHills, CL63 (let alone the S63 which is already plentifully found in the limo fleets in BeverlyHills, alongside S65/600/550) isn't commanding a premium over MSRP, despite recent launch......doesn't bode well for trade-in value....my bet is 65% MSRP trade-in value in one yr.....

I understand that you can order a W221 S65 with an all leather wheel with paddles. I agree that if you're driving an S65 right, your palms get sweaty and wood is a no-no. My 2006 came with all leather wheel. I'm in the minority that finds the buttons just fine. I use them constantly and since your fingers are wrapped there anywhere it takes much less motion to tap the button than stab a paddle with your thumb. But I'd get used to paddles too. Just not wood.
