Mercedes-Benz S180?

1.8 liter Dies-Otto engine in an S-Class:

"As presented in the S-Class, the 1.8-liter Dies-Otto delivers specific output of 134 horsepower per liter and torque at 160 lb-ft per liter, with about 40 miles per gallon. Mercedes says it motivates the 4500-pound S-Class from 0 to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds."

This must be the most powerful 1.8 liter engine Mercedes have ever build..

How in god's name would that thing propel a S-class to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds? Maybe 0-60 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

If it has 134 HP/liter and it's a 1.8 liter engine, then it would put out a TOTAL of about 241HP, which should be enough seeing as how a S280 with only 230HP and 300 NM of torque can get to 60mph in 7.3 seconds.

Maybe it doesn't have windshields, no windows, no seats, no radio, no air conditioner, And maybe it has sails on the roof to catch a good down wind.

Something wrong with these figures. My Greek language skills aren't perfect (means none) but the S280 SWB on their web is listed as 231 hp and 8.2 seconds 0-100 km/h. S350 figures are 7.2 or 7.3, depending where I read those from.

But the S350 would have 268 horsepower wouldn't it? Which would put it in line with the S180's 241 HP. Factor in that the 1.8 L engine would probably be lighter and you could get 0-100 KM/H in 7.5 seconds easily.

I was not "complaining" the comparison with the "S180" but the actual S280 figures (S280 is a real, existing W221 model).

The 3 litre CDI should make 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, it has 235 PS (173 KW), 7.5 should then be quite realistic from a smaller (weight) but more powerful engine.

Oops, misread the article. I thought the engine had a total output of 134 hp, which would be retarded.

Why retarded, if you read the W123 forum, the cars are great and we used to drive them with a diesel of some 65 hp, and it isn't too much lighter than the current W221

The luxury of cars is not likely to decrease. The size of engines and fuel consumption is certainly heading toward high compression, small displacement.

V8 and V12 and W16 are going to be museum pieces before long.

At 241hp and 288tq, it would be quicker than the S280/S300 (nomenclature is market-dependent) which has 231hp and 221tq. But by how much?

S280/S300 can do 0-100km/h in 8.2 secs and if the 'S180' can do it in 7.5 secs, that 0.7 seconds quicker.

For a better comparison, the W220 S350 which has a 3.7L V6 putting out 245hp and 258tq does 0-100 in 7.6secs.

So now 7.5 secs for 241hp and 288tq doesn't sound all that impossible does it? Especially when the 'S180' would have a lighter engine.
