No longer an air filter button

For those of you who owned the previous generation of S Classes,
you recall the button on the dash that you can put on (or leave on) in order to filter bad air, for example when you're behind a smelly school bus etc.
It worked perfectly.
Now in the 07/08's there is no such button, but I am noticing exhaust smells that can't be filtered out.
Is there a way to filter this without having to hit the air/recirculate button?
It seems that MB took a step backwards in this regard.

There is a combination filter now. The same with W211, they changed from separate filters to a single one.

I drove by a dead skunk in my mini yesterday and it filled my lil car with the expected putrid odor. Drove by the same skunk an hour later in the S, no odor! and the air in the S was not on re-circulate (and the mini was not on recirculate either, incase anyone questions myself as the source

Air Filter

Hi

I had this same question. When I have the re-circulate button on, there is no smell... When the button is off and air is entering my car sometimes I get strong smells like diesel from buses etc... The car is 6 months old so I do not think the filter needs replacement..
Any feedbacks would be appreciated..... Thx.
Perhaps a misplaced hose???
