This might have been the scheme...

Trumpet1: I think that the felonious idea was that these same quality control people would flag the cars they themselves sabotaged and they would then send them to the shops MB contracted locally to repair cars found defective in production. What started out as outsourcing to save money (they could have repaired them themselves at the plant but were probably not set up for it) has ended up costing them millions due to the bribes paid to a few quality control personnel. So if my guess is right, it wouldn't have mattered if the sabotaged car's final destination was Stuttgart, Germany or Carmel, CA, they would have been repaired locally just across the street from the Sindelfigen factory at private shops and then sent back to the factory for transportation out to European dealers or the port for the exported cars (trucks and trains). They need to monitor these Quality Control employees better and come down hard on the firms that offered the bribes. What probably gave the culprits away is the fact that production systems now at Mercedes and other top end German manufacturers are so well monitored via computers & robotics (especially production deviations & defects of any type) that management couldn't believe so many defective cars were being produced and that probably got them suspicious. Hence, these QC guys were idiots as well as felons. Saludos, Z356

AMG is establishing 175 new AMG Performance Centers worldwide by the end of next year, offering a more personalized service to customers. This focus on developing an even closer relationship with customers extends to a total of 15 countries. A very special brand experience is also delivered by the AMG Performance Roadshow. Comprehensive measures are already well underway in the key AMG markets of Germany, the US, Japan and China, AMG is currently preparing the roll-out in further regions.

The redesigned sales showrooms of the AMG Performance Centers are characterized by a consistently applied and unique AMG brand identity. Highquality materials, exclusive furnishings and a palette of colours that is representative of AMG create an exclusive atmosphere for sales discussions. An oversized AMG engine badge serves to remind visitors of the company’s philosophy of “One Man – One Engine”: The assembly of each powerful AMG engine by just one engineer.

Mercedes-Benz AMG to Offer Diesel Model in 2012
We recently heard that Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division will launch a hybrid model by 2010. Today, AMG Boss Volker Mornhinweg said that the Mercedes tuning division plans on launching a diesel model within three years - by 2012.

According to AutoCar, Mornhinweg said the car will be high-performance diesel that will be an updated version of its legendary AMG Hammer. The AMG Hammer sedan made its debut in 1986 and was based on a Mercedes-Benz W124. It was powered by a 5.6L V8 that made 360-hp and was said to be faster than a Lamborghini Countach from 60 to 120 mph.

Mornhigweg called the car the “Super Hammer” so we’re definitely excited to see what AMG has in the works. AutoCar says that AMG will most likely pick the C-Class or E-Class diesel for AMG treatment.

Mercedes-Benz To Phase Out V12 Engines

Future high-performance models from Mercedes-Benz will not have more than eight cylinders, if recent rumors out of Germany are to be believed. The company will apparently ditch its V12 motors in favor of smaller, more efficient turbocharged V8s. The move mirrors BMW’s recent decision to drop its naturally aspirated V10 in favor of a twin-turbo V8.

Update on the item above...

Our beloved friends over at AutoBild are reporting that Mercedes-Benz is considering discontinuing the production of the V12 engine. The current CL 600, SL 600, CL 65 AMG and S 65 AMG still use the 12 cylinder engine, but in the next few years, the switch will be made to the V8 twin-turbo engines. While you might have your doubts about the V8 and its power compared to a V12, Mercedes promises that the V8 twin-turbo will be more compact and lighter, adding less weight to the car, producing similar if not better performance with its twin-turbos compared to the V12. Let’s see what the engineers in Stuttgart come up with, it better be good!

Last month it was "Mercedes and BMW and Aston Martin might collaborate on Merc's new generation direct injection V12." Now it is MB are going to drop it... zie disinformazion strategy is werking vell...

If they want a nod to economy how about a V12 diesel? I kind of liked that abortive Audi V12 R8 of earlier this year... Now that would be torque! (As long as it does not sound like a tractor)

Top 5 Most/Least Stolen Vehicles in U.S.
In a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it was found that big trucks and SUVs are among the most appealing to car thieves. I guess thieves at the end of the day are just like us, they want to feel safe (while cruising down the highway and being shot at by cops). It turns out that the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the least stolen car in the US. Is it because it’s difficult to steal?, we doubt it, it’s mostly due to the demand for such cars and their parts, since a lot of stolen cars end up being sold as parts or shipped to other countries. This of course is good news for all Mercedes owners, as we’ll be paying cheaper insurance rates, but mostly importantly, we can feel somewhat safer than the SUV owners.

Top 5 stolen cars:
1. Cadillac Escalade ESV - Claim frequency: 15.0 (per 1,000 insured vehicle years)
2. Ford F-250 SuperCrew - Claim frequency: 13.1 (per 1,000 insured vehicle years)
3. Cadillac Escalade - Claim frequency: 11.3 (per 1,000 insured vehicle years)
4. Dodge Charger - Claim frequency: 11 (per 1,000 insured vehicle years)
5. Ford F-350 SuperCrew - Claim frequency: 10.7 (per 1,000 insured vehicle years)

Top 5 least stolen cars:
1. Mercedes-Benz E Class - Claim frequency: 0.6 (per 1,000 for each insured vehicle year)
2. Buick Rainier - Claim frequency: 0.6 (per 1,000 for each insured vehicle year)
3. Subaru Forester - Claim frequency: 0.6 (per 1,000 for each insured vehicle year)
4. Buick Terraza - Claim frequency: 0.7 (per 1,000 for each insured vehicle year)
5. Volkswagon New Beetle - Claim frequency: 0.7 (per 1,000 for each insured vehicle year)

Reggie Bush Mercedes-Benz CLS ASMA Design Shark II Up For Grabs On eBay

It appears no one is safe from what's now officially being called a recession, as even Kim Kardashian & Co. have resorted to pawning off their pre-owned goods off via the trusty eBay auction block. In addition to a host of garments and fashion accessories that in their prior life managed to adorn one of the finest asses in existence, another item especially noteworthy is the ASMA Design Mercedes CLS Shark II owned by Kim's boyfriend and New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush – the very same model that achieved worldwide notoriety when it made its debut in April of 2006.

Money and good taste don't always go together.

Top Ten 300 Horsepower Cars for Under $10,000 (Two V-12's on the list: BMW and Mercedes-Benz)

1991 BMW 850i, 300 horsepower, $9425 (fair condition)

You’ll have to search a bit to find an 850i that comes in under our budget, but you’ll likely be plenty happy once you do. Those efforts can net you one of BMW’s most singular designs, 5.0-liter V-12 power, and a car that stickered for six-digit prices when new. Looks really good in black, too.

1996 Nissan 300ZX Turbo, 300 horsepower, $9795
We still believe that the twin-turbo 300ZX is one of the most beautifully designed sports cars to ever come out of Japan, as well as being one of the most lauded. This Fairlady carried on the Z tradition in fine fashion, winning award after award from the motoring press, and high praise from the buying public. Two of the Nissan’s main competitors made our list as well (Corvette, Stealth, we’re looking at you), but we know where we’d spend our ten gees.

1999 Lexus GS400, 300 horsepower, $9675
The Lexus attraction has always relied heavily on parent-company Toyota’s reputation for building with quality, a huge plus when looking at a second-buy. The GS400 may only just make the cuts for both pricing and power, but the Lexus is liable to be a sound and stately cruiser for many more years.

1996 Corvette, 300 horsepower, $9975
While the last year of the C4 Corvette could actually be had with the badder, 5.7-liter 335 horsepower LT4 V-8 with a six-speed manual transmission; estimates for the pricing of that package go slightly north of ten grand. Still, there’s a lot of love out there for both the venerable LT1 engine and the C4 body style—especially at this price.

1988 Porsche 928 S4, 315 horsepower, $9450 (fair condition)
As beautiful and high performance a car as any on this list, the stellar 928 also offers more in the way of badge cachet as well. You’ll have to search more in the “fixer-upper” segment of the market to keep the price below the $10K cutoff, but you’ll still be spending half as much as you’d need for a 911 of the same era.

1996 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo, 320 horsepower, $6875
When Dodge put its logo (and little else) on the twin-turbo Mitsubishi 3000GT during the 1990’s, it inadvertently created a performance bargain for the used car shopper of today. At less than $7000 the Stealth is far and away the cheapest car on our list, even though its Mitsubishi twin would almost always command five-figure cash. You’d have to be a huge fan of the triple diamond to pass on the Stealth then, an all-wheel driving tour de force, yours for just chump change.

2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Edition, 325 horsepower, $9695
Another depreciation special, this is the top-of-the-line, all the bells and whistles Camaro was new just six-years ago. Now the unsubtle Camaro can be had for a veritable song. Muscle car lovers will dig the tail-happy SS power, and the stripy 35th Anniversary paint job, though they'll pay a bit more if they want the convertible version.

1995 Jaguar XJR, 326 horsepower, $6715
Stunning Jaguar depreciation helps to make the supercharged XJR one of this list’s horsepower/dollar leaders, with 326 ponies on tap for less than $7K. A dogged adherence to classic Jag styling means that this XJ doesn’t look much different than the model that’s on sale today, at least on the outside.

1999 Ford SVT Lightning, 360 horsepower, $9190
Heroically fast, brutally styled, and wonderfully silly, the second generation SVT Lightning was a product that could only happen in the US of A (yeah yeah, it was built in Canada, you know what we mean.) The only pickup truck on our list, the supercharged, F-150 based Lightning also happens to be one of the most powerful, with its 360 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Giddyup.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SEC, 389 horsepower, $8540
Maybe the only car we could offer on a list of near-400 horsepower cars for under $10,000, the V-12 engined big Mercedes coupe is one of the best power buys out there. Whether is because of the faintly unlovely, brick ****house styling or the drug dealer overtones, the 600SEC can be had for well under our five-figure price limit. Potentially monumental servicing costs notwithstanding, these big-body Benz’s were built pretty well too, meaning your eight or nine thousand dollars will buy you a car that’s likely to continue to age well.

Project Kahn and Lorinser Unite in Tuning Partnership
German tuner Lorinser and UK-based Project Kahn partner on a tuning package for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class

What do you get when a German tuner hooks up with a British designer? Sounds risky, doesn't it? What you get first is a Kahn set of wheels. Specifically, Kahn RSL 9 X 21 matte black in the front and 10.5 X 21 at the rear. Project Kahn also provides some interior design on this Mercedes S Class, with a full bespoke leather package and other unspecified cabin detailing.

Lorinser provides the rest of the restyling through added body paneling, which from the photos we can see are side air vents and subtle new skirting all around that give the design a softer, more grounded look.

"This project is without a doubt the perfect blend of British and German styling and it will certainly ensure a great deal of customer satisfaction," says Marcus Lorinser, head of German tuner Lorinser, who has partnered with Project Kahn on this Mercedes S Class.

Well, you can view the results right here and judge for yourself.

Lorinser - Behind the Scenes Look at German Tuner

Design, development and production - made in Germany

The technical and optical customisation of vehicles is often collectively referred to as tuning. This is a word that certainly applies to flagship companies in the sector, such as Sportservice Lorinser, as well, but this is only half of the story. Looking in more detail at the working methods of this Mercedes manufacturer, which was founded in 1977 in the southern German town of Winnenden, it very quickly becomes obvious why the company officially operates as a car manufacturer. This is particularly clear in the development of the both complex and distinctive aerodynamic components.

As with the creation of a new car, the design of a tuning package starts with a small work of art: the designer's sketches. A simple sketch then undergoes increasingly more detailed refinement right up to an almost realistic colouration. The two-dimensional image is then converted into a plastic 1:1 model, not yet on the computer but it is actually created by adding special easily and precisely mouldable clay directly to the vehicle. It is only at this stage that the digitalisation takes place in order to create the computer model. An engineer takes measurements and scans directly from the model and transfers these to a PC. The designer can then make any final alterations and adjustments before the data is transmitted straight to the machine tools. Care when taking measurements and processing data is the first step in ensuring a perfect fit for the finished product, which also depends on the use of high-quality materials. Instead of using basic ABS plastic, Lorinser has opted for GRP for many years and recently also started using the PU-RIM process. This involves shaping polyurethane using over 100 bar of pressure. The result is exceptionally precise and durable component parts.

In addition to bodywork components, the light metal rims also bear the distinctive Lorinser handwriting. Many of these, including the famous turbine wheel, have now achieved classic status, and the rims are also made using high-quality materials and a premium finishing coat, enabling the customer to enjoy their vehicle in both summer and winter.

Our vehicle tuning service in Winnenden is, after all, not purely a seasonal thing. The selection of materials for components in highly corrosive areas, such as exhaust systems, is especially important. Optically appealing and robust high-grade steel is the material of choice for these parts, so that the exhaust usually lasts as long as the car itself. This also plays an important role in the Lorinser performance enhancement.

In terms of performance, the qualities of design, fit and robustness are not enough. There is also a delicate technical balancing act required from the engineer: on one hand the customer wants as high a horsepower as possible, while on the other hand they do not want to compromise the durability of the engine. As a Mercedes dealer of long standing, which has been operating since 1930, the vehicle tuner is an expert in vehicle mechanics and knows exactly how far to go in each individual case. In the case of power kits for petrol motors, relevant hardware alterations, such as adjusted camshafts, are almost always used in order to create the best performance without affecting the life of the car. For Diesel engines Lorinser usually uses an electronic module. The benefits here are that there is no need to interfere with the sensitive engine electronics and the process is reversible at any time.

In all cases the customer can trust in the high quality of the parts and will also receive comprehensive warranties for all services. This is particularly comprehensive in the case of the vehicle parts Lorinser provides to increase comfort, which is, after all, one of the special characteristics of a Mercedes. The customer is not likely to have any reason to complain or make a claim in connection with Lorinser products, as they all go through extensive test cycles and detailed checks. Even shipment is controlled by the central office, so that no gaps appear in the quality chain.

Just as with the distinctive yet in no way overstated or excessive exterior, the particularly luxurious or sporty interior reflects the special flair of the brand with the star. The customer can also make requests to Lorinser fitting their exact wishes for the interior design. Depending on taste, almost any detail can be provided using high-quality leather of any texture and colour, in addition to decorative fittings and applications made from the best real wood, aluminium or carbon.

It is therefore no surprise that many noteworthy people from the world of sport, films and show business have succumbed to this temptation on four wheels: Bernie Ecclestone, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Paul Tracy, Shaquille O'Neal, Denzel Washington, Sharon Stone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fans of the brand come from all over the world: the company is therefore now represented in 45 countries. The most important markets are Western Europe, the USA, Japan and China. However, an increasing number of fans of Lorinser's high-class vehicle products can also be found in Russia, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Good quality clearly gets around.

Yeah, I agree, I'm with you on keeping the Star. Not too big on the side slats, but to each his own.

I don't see the hood star issue as a big deal. I prefer it on. It's their show car, so they put the Lorinser flat hood badge on it. It literally takes just a couple of minutes to switch back and forth between the two...

Maybach 72: A Stretched Maybach 62 for Those That Need More Seats
A stretched Maybach 62 is on sale in Germany for those that thought seating for four in the ultra-luxurious car was never enough (or for those that just want to show off that they have a limo version of one of the most expensive vehicles in the world).

The 2004 Maybach 62 has only been driven 800 miles and is on sale for 599,000 euros - that’s a whopping $799,574 USD for those that are interested. Of course we think there is a lot more you can do with $799,574 - like helping bail out the American auto industry for example.

Nice! There was a GLK on the truck when I shipped my car on Monday, pretty sharp little SUV.
