The 10 Worst Gas-Tax Guzzling States

1. California: 74.9 cents a gallon
In addition to a flat tax of 18 cents a gallon, the state imposes a 6% state, a 1.25% county and an additional local sales tax on gasoline. Plus, there's a state underground storage tank fee of 1.2 cents per gallon. With California's budget crisis, taxes are more likely to go up, not down.

2. Connecticut: 70.8 cents a gallon

In addition to a flat tax of 25 cents a gallon, the state imposes a 7% gross receipts tax on the wholesale price of gas. State legislators blocked a scheduled increase in that tax to 7.5% on July 1. Now Republicans are pushing to cap the gross receipts tax, a move that the Democrats in control of the state legislature oppose.

3. Illinois: 66.6 cents a gallon
In addition to a flat tax of 19 cents a gallon, the state imposes its 6.25% sales tax on gasoline. Several counties have their own sales tax, raising the sales tax levy to 8%. Some counties also impose a separate tax of 4 cents per gallon.

4. New York: 62.3 cents a gallon
The state sales tax was replaced with a tax of 8 cents a gallon in 2006, but local county sales taxes still range up to 4.75%. The real bite comes from a special "Petroleum Business Tax" of 16.4 cents a gallon, which actually decreased 0.2 cents a gallon in January. There's also a spill tax and a petroleum-testing fee.

5. Michigan: 60.7 cents a gallon
In addition to a flat tax of 19 cents a gallon, there's a 6% sales tax and an environmental regulation fee of .875 cents per gallon. A proposal by the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association, a road builders' group, for an increase of 9 cents a gallon over three years has met political resistance.

6. Indiana: 56.9 cents a gallon
In addition to a flat tax of 18 cents per gallon, the state imposes a 7% sales tax, increased from 6% on April 1. The sales tax increase was pushed by Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels to pay for a cut in real estate taxes.

7. Washington State: 55.9 cents a gallon
The state imposes a high 37.5-cent flat levy per gallon sold at the pump. In 2005, the legislature ordered increases of 2 cents a gallon in July 2007, with another increase of 1.5 cents a gallon this month.

8. Florida: 51.6 cents a gallon
The state's per-gallon gasoline sales tax is tied to the consumer price index, so it inches up with general inflation, not with the price of gas. The latest increase was 0.3 cents a gallon in January. Local taxes, which range from 10.3 cents a gallon to 18.4 cents a gallon, account for much of the tax bite.

9. Wisconsin: 51.3 cents a gallon
The state has imposed a flat tax of 30.9 cents per gallon since 2006 when the legislature voted to stop future automatic increases of about a penny a year. There's also an underground storage tank fee of 2 cents a gallon.

10. Nevada/Hawaii: tied at 51 cents a gallon
County taxes of up to 10 cents a gallon add to Nevada's total. There are also clean-up and inspection fees. Hawaii has a 4% sales tax, and watch out in Honolulu for the city gas tax of 17.5 cents a gallon.

The S600 Pullman Guard: 80 Years of Special Protection

Like the famously luxurious and spacious open-plan Pullman railway coaches after which it is named, the new S 600 Pullman Guard treats its occupants to a traveling environment characterised by generous accommodation and the highest comfort. The vehicle owes its remarkably spacious interior to its 4315-millimetre wheelbase (115 centimetres longer than that of the long version of the special-Mercedes-Benz is proud to present a prestigious new luxury limousine for use by government leaders, captains of industry and royalty – the S 600 Pullman Guard with integrated Highest Protection. The latest in a long and unique tradition of large, armoured, prestige limousines from the world’s oldest automaker, this model also marks a special anniversary for the Stuttgart-based firm: 80 years of manufacturing vehicles with factory-integrated special protection.

The very first Mercedes-Benz car to be built with factory-integrated special protection was a Pullman limousine version of the “Nürburg” 460 (W08) series which was introduced in 1928. At the beginning of the 1930s, this was followed by the 770 (W07) “Grand Mercedes” (which provided protection befitting the status of Japanese Emperor Hirohito, to name but one prominent user) as well as by the special-protection variants of the 500 (W08) and 770 (W 150) model series. In the 1960s, the legendary Mercedes-Benz 600 took on the mantle of state limousine for a period of almost thirty years which saw it serve as an official vehicle not only for the German government, but also for many other countries’ leaders and ruling houses. Further special-protection Pullman versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Guard followed their distinguished predecessors – the very latest being the new S 600 Pullman Guard protection S-Class). Indeed, with an overall length of 6356 millimetres, the S 600 Pullman Guard is a vehicle of truly majestic proportions which offers its passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems. This ensures they are always able to remain fully in touch with the rest of the world while enjoying the luxury and comfort of their own very special place in it.

Developed as a new vehicle on the basis of the S 600
The technical basis for the new Pullman limousine is provided by the S 600 Guard, the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a superbly smooth twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque.

The suspension and basic vehicle structure have been modified as it would be impossible to guarantee the long-term overall stability of the vehicle with its extra-long wheelbase if the lengthening process consisted of simply inserting an additional body section. The modifications also provide a solid foundation for the integration of the heavy special-protection elements. Furthermore, the new state limousine is equipped with a higher rear roof for easier access and greater headroom. Four passengers can be accommodated in the rear compartment behind the partition — in comfortable seats whose face-to-face arrangement recalls the great Pullman tradition.

Integrated special protection for outstanding safety
What’s more, the new Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard offers its demanding passengers extremely effective protection from terrorist attacks. Its Highest Protection status means that it has been engineered to resistance level B6/B7, as tested and certified by state-approved organisations, and also meets additional requirements which go beyond those laid down in the standard but which are tested by public and independent organisations. Its armour resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive charges. Additional safety features include run-flat tyres, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

In order to ensure that the vehicle offers outstanding protection, specialists with many years of experience in this field apply the principle of integrated special protection to the Pullman limousine. In effect this means that, rather than retrofitting the protective elements in the doors, rear wall, side panels, roof lining and firewall etc. of an already finished vehicle, they fully integrate them into the bodyshell in a dedicated production process. This effectively creates a coat of armour around the entire passenger cell. Even the roof frame struts, door locks, door gaps, exterior mirror mountings and other components are incorporated into this security concept. The resulting vehicle offers hallmark Mercedes-Benz build quality combined with comprehensive Highest Protection characteristics, even in those areas where retrofitting would be all but impossible.

A further advantage of integrated special protection is that the protective features actually reinforce the body structure rather than exerting extra strain. In addition, Mercedes-Benz’ integrated design approach means that any body-structure reinforcements required due to the weight of the protective elements can be integrated right from the very start. The result is extraordinary longevity and the same exceptional quality all round that distinguishes Mercedes-Benz standard-production models.
All Mercedes-Benz Guard models display the same outstanding ride comfort and effortlessly superior handling as their series-production counterparts. Further-more, generously dimensioned suspension components and brakes ensure that their handling qualities are almost identical to those of the standard-production models, thus giving the driver an optimal driving feel with high dynamic reserves at all times. The chassis is also designed to provide hallmark Mercedes ride comfort despite the extra weight.

The basis for this is the long-standing, continuous and close cooperation with nationally and internationally recognised security authorities. For decades, this has ensured that the Mercedes specialists have been able to continuously increase their expertise in the fields of development and manufacturing while also applying their vast experience in vehicle protection technology and ballistics to meet the highest standards.

Thanks to the seamless integration of the special protection features, the paint quality and corrosion protection match the standards of Mercedes-Benz series-production vehicles. And, like all other Guard models, the Pullman limousines can be serviced in any Mercedes-Benz service outlet anywhere in the world – another important factor which ensures easy access to comprehensive service of the highest standard.

80 years of Guard – factory-integrated special protection
As the inventor of the motor car, the world’s oldest automaker has always felt a special obligation to drive forward the development of automotive technology at the highest level and to keep on setting new standards for the industry. This demanding objective which Mercedes-Benz has set itself also applies to its special-protection vehicles, as is demonstrated by the Stuttgart-based premium brand’s unique track record in this field. As early as 1928, with a vehicle based on the Nürburg 460 model, Daimler-Benz became the first company to factory-fit vehicles with special protective elements design to provide the occupants with effective protection from attack with firearms and explosives. This was the start of eight decades of extensive materials testing and focused development, during much of which Mercedes-Benz enjoyed a unique position in the field of special-protection vehicles.

The special-protection version of the Mercedes-Benz “Nürburg” 460 model was followed in the 1930s and 1940s by armoured variants of the 770 “Grand Mercedes” as well as the 500 and 540 K models. In September 1963, Mercedes-Benz presented a new, exclusive prestige vehicle – the legendary 600 model – to meet the requirements of the most demanding customers. Shortly after the launch, the German government approached Daimler-Benz with a request for an armoured version for state visitors. For the engineering team in Stuttgart, this marked the beginning of a new era characterised by a new set of challenges – not least, how to reconcile the requirements of a special-protection vehicle with a self-supporting body structure which had by now become the industry norm. With no other German manufacturer at the time able to offer factory-built armoured passenger cars and Mercedes-Benz limousines being held in high esteem by many governments around the world, a close working relationship developed between Daimler-Benz and the German authorities. In the course of this cooperation, the Stuttgart-based automaker came up with many new technical solutions and concepts. Indeed, this intensive cooperation formed the basis for the current European standards which define the different resistance levels.

In 1970, when there was suddenly great demand for special-protection vehicles following attacks on diplomats in Latin America, Daimler-Benz rose to the occasion with armoured versions of the 280 SEL 3.5 model. Demand grew once again during the 1970s with the attacks by the RAF terrorist group. Mercedes-Benz therefore built special-protection variants of the eight-cylinder 350 SE, 350 SEL, 450 SE and 450 SEL models which it supplied to a select group of customers, including state bodies and governments in Europe and beyond.

All subsequent generations of the S-Class have been available in the form of special-protection variants. This was the case with the 126 model series as well as the 140, 220 and the current 221 model series. In addition to its S-Guard line-up, Mercedes-Benz today also offers E-Guard and G-Guard special-protection vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz offers High Protection and Highest Protection
Mercedes-Benz uses this know-how acquired over many years to provide answers to different risk scenarios all over the world, offering Mercedes-Benz Guard models with various resistance levels in accordance with the European standard.

High-Protection vehicles, engineered to the European B4 resistance level, resist large-calibre revolver ammunition and offer particularly good protection against the increasing threat of drug-related and violent street crime.

Highest-Protection vehicles, engineered to resistance level B6/B7, provide effective protection against the threat posed by terrorist attacks. Their armour is designed to resist rifle-launched projectiles from military weapons which have a velocity almost twice that of bullets fired from a revolver. They also offer resistance to shrapnel from hand grenades and explosive charges.

Mercedes-Benz Adaptive High-beam Assistant

Nighttime journeys by car are about to become safer in future. Mercedes-Benz has developed an innovative system that automatically adapts headlamp range to the distance of vehicles ahead or to oncoming vehicles. This means car drivers will at all times benefit from optimum headlamp range to recognize other road users, pedestrians or danger spots more easily and more quickly. The adaptive high-beam assistant will be available from spring 2009.

Unlike conventional systems, which simply switch between dipped and main beam, the new Mercedes technology is adaptive, adjusting light yield in accordance with prevailing traffic situations. Dipped beam range can therefore be increased from around 65 meters to as much as 300 meters – without dazzling other road users. Should the system recognize oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead, it continuously adjusts headlamp range so that the headlamp cone falls in front of other road users. The high-beam assistant also takes steering angle into account, so that headlamps are dipped appropriately on tight corners. On empty and open roads, the system gently switches to high beam.

Practical tests have shown that the adaptive high-beam assistant significantly enhances the safety of motorists when driving in the dark. Despite oncoming traffic, pedestrian dummies positioned at the edge of the road were recognized at a distance of around 260 meters — approximately 150 meters earlier than with conventional dipped beam lighting. The new Mercedes assistant therefore offers a more than two-fold safety bonus.

In addition, the system helps relieve the burden on car drivers: since it is no longer necessary to operate the lever on the steering column, full concentration can be given to driving. Once activated, the adaptive high-beam assistant will always automatically provide the optimum headlamp range.

According to the latest studies, the main beam is switched on for approximately just eight percent of journeys at night on average.

Best Shots Yet of Mercedes S-Class Facelift

The Mercedes S Class has only been on the market for a short while but with rivals such as the BMW 7-series and Audi A8, the German manufacturer cannot afford to be complacent. Ahead of its launch our spies have caught a prototype shed of almost all of its disguise.

Clearly visible are the new front skirt and fog lights, a revised bumper, as well as the new side mirrors. There will also will be a modified layout of the headlights: while the flashers will move to the bottom of the units, LED daylight driving lamps will be fitted to the outer edges of the front lamp units. A slightly re-designed rear bumper and taillights without the colored “metal” stripes will round off the facelift.

Engines are likely to benefit from a bit of emission busting tuning whilst the rumors state the model will be available with both petrol and diesel hybrids by 2010.

With regards to the taillights, that seems to be backwards in terms of upgrading/refreshing. You would think they would have not chromed the earlier models and left the chrome for the refresh.

I like the grille update and the mirror enlargement. I love the tailpipe change. Wish mine looked like that. I hope this means they are getting rid of those ugly 08 and 09 model tailpipes as seen on the S600s. I never understood that.

scared of being stalked
night downtown

to my fellow posters;

the other night i had the joy of being chauffeured into down town Philadelphia in a S550. I didnt want to drive that night and i figured a 550 would be better than a taxi. Boy was i right. . My love for the S Class grew by 500% that night. From the lush leather interior; to the illuminating soft lights all around the car; to the user controllable rear shades that go up with a push of a button; to the speed this huge luxury boat has; this is the most beautiful vehicle on the road today. I felt like a prince with all the looks i was receiving and people wondering whom i was. Its clear to me now, as to why billionaire prefer to be driven around in this vehicle. I can't wait until this weekend to do it all over again, and for the day which i have one of these vehicles to call my own, and a chauffeur as well.

Thanks and take care!

Yeah, the upgrade looks more aggressive like the S550 AMG package (2007 and 2008). Definitely an huge improvement over the regular 2008 S550. That's why I went with the AMG package on my 2008.

Face of the New E-Class

Very aggressive and sporty, but the doors look like they're frameless on top, which I don't like. But a great design none the less. Makes you wonder how the next gen S-Class will evolve.

Tuning the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class: The Kicherer CL 60 Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz CL600 is an immaculate creature, offering an incredible amount of luxury along with an equally awe-inspiring level of power. But for those looking to add an additional dose of thrust to the model's 517-horsepower twin-turbo V12, Kicherer has unveiled a new tuning package for the CL600 – one they're calling the CL 60.

Highlights of the package include an increase in output of 53 horsepower and 70 Nm of torque, a high-performance rear axle equipped with a differential lock and a modified transmission control module, handcrafted multi-part 20“ Kicherer RS-1 wheels and a lowering of the suspension by 25 millimeters. To add a bit of outward style to their CL 60, Kicherer also added a few external mods, ranging from a new front/rear apron and side skirts to a four-pass sports exhaust system. And completing the package, various carbon fiber elements have been added to the CL 60's interior, including accents on both the doors and center console.

It's not revolutionary by any means, but it is a straightforward way to add a bit of individualism to your CL600 without compromising any of its original, fantastic attributes.

Hottest Sports Cars of 2008
Speed and style are still the operative words for sports cars, but they're getting plusher and more luxurious, thanks in part to an aging consumer base.

Porsche 911 GT2
Priced at nearly $200,000, the GT2 is the most powerful street-legal 911 yet. It's visually distinguished by oversized air intakes up front and a unique spoiler at the rear. But it's most notable for a twin-turbochargd 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine that sends 530 hp to the rear wheels. The 0-60 mph sprint happens in just over 3.5 seconds. Top speed is rated at more than 200 mph. Other upgrades include carbon fiber/ceramic-compound brake discs and titanium tailpipes.

Nissan GT-R
Soon available in the U.S. after more than a decade of remaining tantalizingly out of reach as the overseas-only Skyline GT-R, the new GT-R ("Skyline" gets dropped from the name) runs with many of the top sports cars for less money. A twin-turbo V6 engine drives all four wheels and propels occupants to 60 mph in less than four seconds. Given its high-profile use in video games, the GT-R is one of the rare sports cars that has both auto-enthusiast and techno-geek appeal. To that end, the creators of the popular Gran Turismo video game series helped design the GT-R's high-tech-looking instrument panel.

Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster
A new roadster version of Mercedes' hand-built super coupe lets you race the stars, provided you have nearly half million dollars on hand. Both the SLR McLaren Roadster and Coupe were developed jointly with Mercedes' Formula One racing partner McLaren. A power-operated insulated fabric top lowers in about 10 seconds and facilitates open-air conversations at up to 120 mph; top speed exceeds 200 mph.

Maserati GranTurismo
The new-for-2008 GranTurismo is big news for the sports car world as Maserati's marginally successful Coupe and GranSport models finally give way to a svelte and modern-looking two-door four-seater. Its Ferrari-designed 4.2-liter V8 powerplant is shared with its four-door sibling, the Quattroporte. As befits a kinder, gentler sports car, only a six-speed automatic transmission is offered. A fully independent suspension includes anti-squat and anti-dive geometry to keep it on an even keel under extreme acceleration and braking.

Lotus Elise/Exige
Already among the lightest, quickest, and most efficient sports cars available, the Elise roadster and Exige coupe get even faster for 2008: The Elise gets a 220-hp supercharged four-cylinder engine and the Exige gets a 240-hp version. The top Exige is able to reach 60 mph in just four seconds, which amounts to exotic-car abilities at a budget price — and with excellent fuel economy. Airbags are now standard across the line, along with other minor upgrades.

Lamborghini Reventon
Talk about exclusivity — only 20 rich people will get their hands on a Reventon, and the cars are all spoken for already. Like the Murcielago LP640 upon which it's based, this extreme-looking sports car is named after a famed fighting bull and promises hard-charging performance thanks to its 650-hp 6.5-liter V12 engine. Its odd-looking body is made of lightweight carbon fiber and its high-tech cockpit is styled after that of a fighter jet, with instrumentation made solely of LCD displays.

Ferrari F430 Scuderia
This limited-production enhanced-performance version of the Ferrari F430 is as close to a street-legal race car as you'll ever see (albeit in a blur). Its low weight (2,775 pounds) and a screaming 510-hp V8 engine combine to provide a stunning 0-60 mph time of about 3.5 seconds — that's nearly as fast as the legendary Ferrari Enzo. Its F1-SuperFast2 sequential-shift transmission affords lightning-fast gear changes, while an E-Diff2 electronic differential delivers added stability and handling feedback.

Dodge Viper SRT10
The vicious Viper SRT10 Coupe and Roadster are reborn for 2008 with a beefed-up V10 engine that now produces a full 600 hp. That translates to a 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds. It's further enhanced with a new six-speed manual gearbox and speed-sensing limited-slip differential, along with upgraded brakes and functional air extractors on the hood. It may not last in the lineup beyond 2009, however, which could make the Viper a future collectible.

Chevrolet Corvette
Still one of the best sports-car values, the rambunctious Corvette gets an infusion of power thanks to a new 6.2-liter V8, which channels 430 hp to the rear wheels. Adding an optional performance exhaust system brings the total up to 436 hp. It remains available in two body styles: a coupe with a removable, rigid roof panel, and a soft-top convertible. The higher-performance 505-hp Z06 coupe remains the top model, at least until an even-quicker version debuts for 2009.

Audi R8
For the first time, Audi reaches out to buyers in a higher tax bracket with the low and wide (it barely cleared the sides of our rather cramped garage in New York City) R8. Priced well into six figures, it looks like a street-legal racecar, but is civil enough to be driven daily, though you'll want to watch those huge wheels with low-profile tires around curbs and potholes. A 420-hp V8 engine can be mated to a six-speed manual or Audi's R-Tronic sequential-shift transmission. The latter is fun on the track, but clunky around town (it should not be confused with Audi/VW's excellent DSG transmission). Handling dynamics are tear-inducing in a good way, and the engine sounds melodic from behind its glass enclosure.

Aston Martin DBS
Now owned by a consortium that includes a Kuwaiti investment firm, Aston Martin's latest model is a racier interpretation of the DB9 that packs a 510-horsepower V12 engine. The new James Bond, actor Daniel Craig, drove it in "Casino Royale." Aston Martin designer Marek Reichman likens the DBS to a muscle-bound man in a tuxedo: dashing good looks, with a hint of machismo and heavy helping of performance (i.e., 0-60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds). It rides on a bonded aluminum structure, with aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon-fiber composite body panels, all for the sake of weight reduction.

2009 Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid
ON SALE: Fall 2009
BASE PRICE: $100,000 (est)
DRIVETRAIN: 3.5-liter, 299-hp, 284-lb-ft V6 with integrated motor assist; RWD, seven-speed automatic
CURB WEIGHT: 4,383 lb
0-62 MPH: 7.2 sec (mfr)
FUEL ECONOMY: 30 mpg

Mercedes-Benz missed North America's move toward hybrids. It was caught sleeping, there was not enough research and development funding, it was too focused on diesels for the European market--pick your reason. It just wasted the opportunity to be a pioneer in the hybrid field. That accolade belongs to Toyota and its Mercedes-rivaling Lexus division, whose serene LS 600h is regarded as the best luxury hybrid thus far.

So, a lot hangs on the new Mercedes S400 BlueHybrid, developed in a joint engineering program with rival BMW, which plans to unveil its version, the 7-series ActiveHybrid, at the Paris motor show. Mercedes is keen to ensure that the S400 BlueHybrid is considered something extraordinary. That's one reason project leader Oliver Vollrath says it has taken so long to reach production. "When you're turning up to the party late, you want to make sure you've got something special to offer," he says.

When it goes on sale in North America in September 2009, the S400 BlueHybrid likely will cost about the same as today's S550. The problem is, to the average shopper, it looks like the three-year-old S350. You can look for aerodynamic amendments or changes in ride height, but you'll be looking in vain. Only subtle BlueHybrid badges on the flanks and the trunk lid signal the high-tech driveline. Keener observers will spot new wheels and tires: 18-inch alloys with low-rolling-resistance Continental Contact 235/55R rubber.

Underneath, a lightly reworked version of the existing Mercedes 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine gains a new cylinder head, lightweight pistons and a reprofiled camshaft for altered valve timing. It does without the direct injection used on the CLS350's similar V6. Output increases by just 7 hp over the S350, at 279 hp, with torque remaining the same at 258 lb-ft.

Those are not dazzling figures for a car that weighs 4,383 pounds. But a three-phase AC electric motor, mounted within the front of the gearbox housing, provides additional thrust when required. The S400 BlueHybrid's peak output swells to 299 hp and 284 lb-ft, with drive channeled to the rear wheels via the standard Mercedes seven-speed automatic. The new system does not support pure electric propulsion like that offered by the LS 600h; the efforts of the electric motor are used exclusively to assist the gasoline engine.

Mercedes expects that the S400 BlueHybrid's advanced new lithium-ion battery will be the envy of rival carmakers. Weighing 60 pounds and made up of five cells, the battery pack uses a chemical process based on nickel-cobalt-aluminum. This, Mercedes claims, provides more efficient charging and improved discharge properties compared with the nickel-metal-hydride technology used in most hybrids. It also is incredibly compact, so much so that Mercedes has managed to mount the battery in the position usually reserved for the S350's standard lead-acid unit at the base of the windscreen, where it is cooled by a patented process linked with the car's air-conditioning system, keeping it operating within an optimal range between 59 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

The battery stores electricity created under braking and when coasting, during which the S400 BlueHybrid's electric motor functions as a generator. Other fuel-saving measures include an integrated stop/start system, in which the gasoline engine switches off when the driver engages the brakes at speeds of less than 10 mph and then automatically restarts when the accelerator is depressed.

The S400 BlueHybrid doesn't demand any change in driving style as some hybrids do. It feels much like the S350, only a touch more powerful under acceleration in lower gears. Around town, the stop/start system works well, the electric motor providing almost instantaneous start-up after the engine has been automatically switched off at traffic lights and such. On the open road in upper gears, the added output is not immediately evident, in part because of the added 165 pounds of the hybrid system. Power delivery is smooth and seamless, with or without electric assist. What stands out is how fast the battery charges; one long, downhill stretch is enough to see it charge at almost 100 percent.

Mercedes claims 0 to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds, just 0.1 second inside the time it quotes for the S350. But the emphasis is not on performance. The S400 BlueHybrid is meant to optimize fuel economy. A claimed combined city/highway average of 30 mpg betters that of the S350 by 7 mpg, yielding a gain of 165 miles in range. Equally impressive is the CO2 rating, which, at 190 grams per kilometer, betters that of its gasoline-only sibling by 57 grams per kilometer.

An electronic display in the instrument panel relays all relevant information, glowing green when the battery is stowing electricity and red when electricity is being used. Another display keeps the driver informed of the state of charge.

A taut chassis and supple suspension are longtime Mercedes traits. The S400 BlueHybrid feels fluid and well balanced despite the added weight, sponging away potholes with poise and control. It can maintain a rapid pace on winding roads and high speeds on the autobahn with stability.

Criticisms? The brakes seem over-assisted, with an uneven feel in the first few degrees of travel, making them hard to modulate. The steering also appears to have lost some inherent directness, with electric rather than traditional hydraulic power assist.

The S400 BlueHybrid feels like a well-engineered car that moves the hybrid game along, thanks largely to its lithium-ion-battery technology, superior to the nickel-metal-hydride technology most carmakers have relied on. But with its me-too looks, Mercedes dealers might have their work cut out for them in trying to lure S-class owners into the showroom. The biggest factor in closing the deal--the price, so that one can calculate the payoff in improved fuel economy--won't be available until close to the on-sale date. That's just as well. There's no telling what gasoline might cost by then, and any calculations now would be meaningless.

Daimler Won’t Kill Maybach, Brand Not Losing Money

Remember Maybach? Yeah, that uber-luxury Mercedes-Benz brand that sells only 2 cars based on the S-Class. Earlier this year, Daimler was considering selling the brand after it sold only 146 cars last year. According to Automotive News, the brand that is supposed to compete with the Bentleys and the Rolls-Royces is going to stick around.

Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, says that Daimler won’t kill Maybach because it is not losing money.

A handful of 62S Landaulet, a ‘convertible’ Maybach, will go on sale in December with prices starting at $1.35 million. We’re pretty sure some rich-folks in Dubai will buy them.

However the future of Maybach still seems shaky as competitors like Rolls-Royce gear up for cheaper and smaller models. Maybach, so far, has nothing planned after the 62S Landaulet.

The problem with Maybach is that it looks like a

drum roll please.....

....

Lincoln Town Car .....from the front

That and the fact the the brand simply does not have the shock value that RR or Bentley's have. The styling is also a little too outdated.

Hottest Sports Cars of 2009
Speed still sells, but nobody said you had to burn lots of gas to be first across the finish line.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
Price: $280,000 (estimated)
0-62 mph: 4.2 seconds
Top Speed: 180 mph
Mileage: N/A
Alfa Romeo hasn't sold cars in the United States since the early 1990s, but the Italian automaker made a grand re-entrance this year with its stunning 2008 8C Competizione sports car. Only 90 or so are destined for the United States in 2008. A convertible version, called the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Spider, highlighted here, will be sold in equally limited numbers through Maserati dealerships beginning next year (Fiat owns both Alfa Romeo and Maserati).

Like the coupe, the convertible 8C Competizione has carbon-fiber body panels and is powered by a Maserati-derived 4.7-liter V8 engine that delivers 450 horsepower. It adds a power-operated two-layer fabric top that drops at the push of a button.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport
Price: $2,000,000 (estimated)
0-60 mph: 2.5 seconds
Top Speed: 250 mph
Mileage: 8 mpg city/16 mpg highway
As if owning an "ordinary" 1,001-horsepower $1.5 million Bugatti Veyron 16.4 isn't enough, the richest people in the world can now pay about $500,000 more to buy a new Grand Sport version that features a removable transparent polycarbonate roof panel.

Bugatti will build only 50 Grand Sports a year, with a maximum run of 150. The first 40 are already promised to current Veyron 16.4 owners. The top must be removed by hand and left at home for top-down motoring. A fold-up cloth panel that fits in the tiny trunk can be used when open-top excursions turn soggy. But you'll be limited to a top speed of 85 mph.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Price: $102,450
0-60 mph: 3.4 seconds
Top Speed: 205 mph
Mileage: 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway
A six-figure price is unheard of for a Corvette. But considering that it competes with cars costing three times as much, the new Corvette ZR1 still seems like a bargain. It's bursting with advanced technology. The hand-built supercharged 638-horsepower V8 engine is the centerpiece.

With carbon fiber body panels, electronically adjustable shock absorbers and lightweight, heat-dissipating brakes, the Corvette ZR1 is truly a race car for the streets.

Ferrari California
Price: $190,000 (estimated)
0-60 mph: "less than 4.0 seconds"
Top Speed: N/A
Mileage: N/A
For Ferrari, even a $190,000 limited-production convertible with jaw-dropping looks and neck-snapping performance is considered an "entry level" model — and that's what the new California is. As the first Ferrari to feature a retractable metal convertible top, it further distances the Italian automaker from its heritage of fixating on performance and speed to the detriment of comfort and ease of use.

But don't be mistaken, the performance and speed are still there, thanks to a 460-horsepower 4.3-liter V8 mounted just rear of the front axle for good weight distribution. The dual-clutch automated manual transmission has seven speeds, which is one more than usual.

Koenigsegg CCXR Edition
Price: $2,200,000 (est)
0-62 mph: 2.9 seconds
Top Speed: 254 mph
Mileage: N/A
The CCXR Edition from Swedish boutique automaker Koenigsegg gives the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 a run for its crown as the fastest, priciest production car in the world. Not only does its 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine produce a ridiculous 1,018 horsepower, it can do so while running on E85 ethanol, E100 biofuel or plain old low-grade 88 octane gasoline, which perhaps makes it a "green" supercar of sorts. Only a handful of these mind-bending sports cars will be produced.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
Price: $201,000
0-62 mph: 3.7 seconds
Top Speed: 202 mph
Mileage: N/A
Lamborghini's least expensive model gets subtle styling changes but a significant hardware upgrade at which the car's cryptic new name hints. The Gallardo has been rechristened with the "LP560-4" moniker by virtue of its new 560-horsepower V10 engine and rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

Traditionalists will lament that a standard manual transmission is no longer available. They must content themselves with a six-speed sequential-shift gearbox controlled by paddles behind the steering wheel.

Lotus Evora
Price: $75,000
The small two-door, four-seat sports car is designed to be more comfortable and practical than the tiny race-track-ready Elise. As such, it is larger, includes more amenities, and actually has a trunk. It will be powered by a Toyota V6 engine. The first Evoras will arrive in the United States in late fall 2009. Lotus sources anticipate that demand will outpace supply through at least the first year of production, during which less than 700 cars are expected to be allocated for the United States.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series
Price: $220,000 (estimated)
0-60 mph: 3.9 seconds
Top Speed: 199 mph (electronically limited)
Mileage: N/A
Just when it seemed like Mercedes-Benz couldn't possibly build a more over-the-top vehicle based on one of its existing models, it unveils the SL65 AMG Black Series. Following the 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series' lead, this new model kicks the already Herculean 518-horsepower SL63 AMG roadster up a notch.

At its heart is a hand-built 6.0-liter V12 engine turbocharged to generate a stunning 670 hp. That's 32 hp more than the new Chevy Corvette ZR1. Some of the body is made of exotic carbon-fiber composite. Using that material and replacing the retractable roof with a fixed one both help to reduce weight.

Nissan GT-R
Price: $69,850
0-60 mph: 3.5 seconds
Top Speed: 193 mph
Mileage: 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway
The Nissan GT-R coupe outpaces some of the most desirable sports cars in the world for far less money. Although it's merely a Nissan, auto enthusiasts have been salivating over its arrival for years, after previously only being offered overseas.

We wouldn't call its carbon fiber and aluminum body beautiful, but it is purposefully crafted to be aerodynamically stable at high speeds. The GT-R packs a 480-horsepower twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 engine, quick-shifting dual-clutch six-speed sequential-shift transmission, and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system.

Tesla Roadster
Price: $109,000
0-60 mph: 3.9 seconds
Top Speed: 125 mph
Mileage: N/A
Even after several years of production delays stemming from issues with its newfangled lithium-ion-battery-powered electric drivetrain, the Tesla Roadster remains one of the hottest sports cars around. Its promise of guilt-free hell-raising has well-heeled enthusiasts lining up to pay six figures. Think of it as a Ferrari with no tailpipe emissions.

Tesla says the carbon-fiber-bodied two-seat convertible can drive 220 miles on a single charge. Production officially began earlier this year but has reportedly been stunted by quality-control problems with the car's two-speed dual-clutch electro-hydraulic transmission. A replacement gearbox is reportedly in the works.

Honorable Mention:Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Price: $132,900
0-60 mph: 4.7 seconds
Top Speed: 180 mph
Mileage: 12 city/19 highway
Aston Martin's smallest, least expensive model gets a power boost for 2009. The engine now puts out 420 hp and 347 pounds-feet of torque, up 40 horsepower and 45 pounds-feet. The standard six-speed manual and Sportshift sequential manual have been improved, and the suspension has been upgraded.

The interior gets revised controls and a hard-drive-based navigation system. The timeless and seductive exterior styling is unchanged.

Honorable Mention:Lamborghini LP640 Versace Roadster
Price: N/A
0-62 mph: 3.4 seconds
Top Speed: 205 mph
Mileage: 8 mpg city/13 mpg highway
A new Versace edition of the Lamborghini LP640 Roadster brings high fashion to this head-turner. It has a special pastel white exterior color, but most of its unique features are on the black and white leather interior with hand-embroidered Versace logos.

Lamborghini dealerships and Versace boutiques will offer matching fashion accessories, including a briefcase, suitcase, gloves, driving shoes, belt, wallet, key ring, beauty case, hat and jeans.

Honorable Mention:Maserati GranTurismo S
Price: $130,000 (estimated)
0-62 mph: 4.9 seconds
Top Speed: 183 mph
Mileage: N/A
Only a year after the debut of the original GranTurismo, Maserati follows with a higher-performance version for 2009, called the GranTurismo S. The main upgrade is a larger V8 engine (4.7-liters of displacement versus 4.2-liters in the base model), which puts out 35 horsepower more, for a total of 440 hp.

Other improvements include a new six-speed sequential-manual automated transmission, firmer suspension and beefier brakes. Subtle styling tweaks improve high-speed aerodynamics. Inside, special sport seats are slathered in Poltrona Frau leather and faux suede Alcantara upholstery.

Honorable Mention:Mercedes SLK-Class
Price: $44,950-$64,300
0-60 mph: 4.9-6.1 seconds
Top Speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)
Mileage: 14-17 city/22-26 highway
The perky Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster gets a styling and engine makeover for 2009. The base model, now called the SLK 300, gets a slightly more fuel-efficient 228-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine; the SLK350 gets a more powerful version of the 3.5-liter V6, which now generates 300 hp.

The 5.4-liter V8 in the top SLK55 AMG carries over. A new variable-assist power steering system promises quicker cornering. The front and rear of the SLK have been made to look more aggressive.

Honorable Mention:Porsche Boxster S Design Edition 2
Price: $72,000 (estimated)
0-60 mph: 5.1 seconds
Top Speed: 170 mph
Mileage: 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway
Porsche extends the life of its aging but still seductive Boxster with a limited-production Porsche Design Edition 2 for the higher-performance "S" version. Less than 50 will be delivered to the United States.

Only cosmetic changes set them apart from regular Boxsters. These include a Carrera White exterior, grey side stripes, white wheels, side air intakes, center console and instrument dials, a black leather interior and a Stone Grey convertible top. A matching Porsche Design Edition 2 Chronograph wristwatch comes with the package.

Honorable Mention:Porsche Cayman S Sport
Price: $62,000 (estimated)
0-60 mph: 5.1 seconds
Top Speed: 170 mph
Mileage: 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway
A new "Sport" version prolongs the appeal of Porsche's Cayman, which like the Boxster is due for a full revamp soon. Only 100 Cayman S Sports will be sold in the United States. The 303-horsepower 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine is slightly more powerful than the engine in the regular Cayman S.

A sport exhaust system is added and the automaker's high-tech adjustable suspension system comes standard. Buyers can choose unique exterior paint colors. The interior features a black design package that includes sport seats and a steering wheel borrowed from the race-track ready Porsche 911 GT3.

Honorable Mention:Porsche 911 Carrera
Price: $75,600-$88,200
0-60 mph: 4.3-4.5 seconds
Top Speed: 180-188 mph
Mileage: 17-18 mpg city/25-26 mpg highway
Both the coupe and convertible versions of Porsche's 911 Carrera are invigorated for 2009. The standard engine now produces 345 horsepower and the upgraded engine in "S" models gets bumped to 385 horsepower. Amazingly, estimated fuel economy remains the same as before.

A new seven-speed double-clutch automated manual transmission replaces the long-running Tiptronic S automatic as the optional transmission. The exterior has been restyled, with the biggest changes apparent on the front and rear of the cars.

First Mercedes-Benz AMG Hybrid Coming in 2010

We’ve been hearing about AMG going green for a while and now CAR has a couple of new details on the diesel and hybrid future of the high-performance Mercedes-Benz models. According to AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg, AMG is getting ready to produce hybrid and diesel version of its cars that will also use low-weight material in order to keep performance at current levels.

Mornhinweg said that the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, which is 250kg lighter than the SL 63, will be the last high-performance AMG to have such massive power. He said the upcoming Gullwing supercar will be the first new model that will produce a modest 571-hp.

Mornhinweg said that by 2010 AMG will introduce a mild-hybrid that will feature start/stop technology, lightweight components and will reduce fuel-consumption of the 6.2L V8’s by 30 percent. It will borrow a lot of the technology introduced in the new S 400 BlueHYBRID.

As for deisels, Mornhinweg says that AMG won’t do large torquey diesel models. Instead, AMG will lean more towards a smaller and more responsive diesel.

He is hoping that the new path will increase AMG annual sales to 30,000 units.

The World's Priciest Car Options 2009

1. Maybach 62*
Option: Glass Partition Wall; Price: $29,900
For the price of a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan, chauffeured Maybach 62 owners can achieve tranquility and privacy with the push of a button, securing themselves behind a glass partition that divides them from the driver. The soundproof barrier is complemented by curtains that can be opened and closed electronically, plus an intercom system that lets impatient backseat riders tell their driver to step on it. Maybach reps say that most buyers of the 62 add the glass partition wall.

2. Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano*
Option: Rossa Monza Paint; Price: $22,000
The classic Ferrari color, a deep red called Rossa Corsa, just won't do it for Ferrari lovers who yearn for the ultimate in exclusivity. For these true color connoisseurs, Ferrari offers a $22,000 paint job that covers the 599 GTB Fiorano in Rossa Monza burgundy metallic. This deeper red isn't as traditional for a Ferrari, but will help your car stand out from the legions of Ferrari owners who think all Ferraris look best in bright red.

3. Bentley Arnage RL*
Option: Rear TV and DVD Package; Price: $20,690
Bentley Arnage RL passengers rarely call "shotgun!" to secure a seat up front. Why would they, when they can sit in the back and bask in the glow of twin 15-inch LCD screens built into the front seats?
Sure, the pictures won't pop like on a 52-inch Sharp Aquos with HDTV, but it'll do for the short ride to the country club. Two separate DVD systems allow independent viewing choices for each passenger.

4. Maybach 57 and 62*
Option: Customer-Specified Color Match Price: $20,450
Henry Ford once told his customers they could have their Model T in any color, as long as it was black. Similarly, a standard Maybach is available in black, among several other standard colors. But should you want your Maybach to match your house or your shoes or your hair, or you just want to stand out from the rest of the ultra-luxury crowd, you can pony up $20,450 for the right to pick your own custom shade.

5. Maybach 57 and 62*
Option: Emerald Green Interior; Price: $19,900
Maybach's emerald green interior option bathes occupants in a verdant hue that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Seductive green leather covers almost every surface of the cabin to make any owner feel like royalty (assuming he or she isn't already). The color also might remind passengers of the currency that was used to put them into such an opulent environment.

6. Bentley Arnage R*
Option: Level 2 Entertainment Package; Price: $19,190
Need to keep demanding backseat passengers occupied during a road trip? Bentley's Level 2 package turns the rear seat into a veritable luxury lounge. Some of the more notable interior modifications are a beautiful wood veneer cocktail cabinet, a wine cooler located in the center armrest (Jeeves can be the designated driver), and two foldaway work tables ideal for signing documents or providing a resting place for champagne flutes.
Exterior additions include 19-inch chrome twin-spoke wheels, a jeweled fuel filler cap, and touches from Bentley's Mulliner Specification package.

7. Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe*
Option: Brushed Stainless Steel Hood and Teak Deck Combination; Price: $17,000
This breathtaking option package from Rolls-Royce is for those who prefer the less discreet things in life. A stunning brushed stainless steel hood for the $407,000 Phantom Drophead Coupe commands attention as it converges on Rolls-Royce's timeless "Spirit of Ecstasy" winged hood ornament. And when cruising with the top down, passersby will be enamored by the nautically inspired teak deck that supplants the standard cloth tonneau cover.
Surely, those who can drop $17,000 for an option can also afford to maintain it — perhaps the same crews that buff the teak fittings on yachts will now add tonneau covers to their repertoire.

8. Ferrari F430*
Option: Carbon Fiber Fittings for Engine Compartment and Carbon Fiber Intake Manifold; Price: $16,616
Forward-thinking Ferrari enthusiasts will opt for carbon-fiber engine compartment moldings, knowing that curious onlookers often peer through the F430's glass engine cover to steal a glimpse at the V12 powerplant. The engine is already considered a work of art by many, so why not surround it with a beautiful frame?
The carbon-fiber option also adorns the intake manifold specially styled air filter housing covers and a Ferrari badge. The option looks cool, but it's also functional: The full carbon-fiber intake manifold weighs 4.5 pounds less than the standard part.

9. Bentley Continental GT*
Option: Carbon-Ceramic Brake System; Price: $16,500
For $16,500, buyers can outfit their $175,000 Bentley Continental GT with carbon-ceramic brakes that easily bring the large, heavy coupe down from high speeds. Compared to the standard stoppers, these brakes are better prepared to withstand the repeated heavy use and high heat conditions associated with track driving.
Cross-drilled front discs measure more than 16.5 inches in diameter, while the rear discs are nearly as large, reaching over 14 inches. The carbon-ceramic brakes are also 50 pounds lighter than the stock units. The reduced weight improves handling.

10. Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 *
Option: Carbon-Ceramic Brakes; Price: $16,250
The most affordable option on our list still costs as much as a Volkswagen Jetta. Lamborghini's carbon-ceramic brakes are designed for high-performance use. "Customers who bring their Lamborghinis to the track often go with this option," says Scott Rothermel, General Sales Manager of Lamborghini Chicago in Westmont, Ill.
Besides being more resistant to heat and heavy use, the carbon-ceramic option raises the size of the rear brake discs to 15 inches in diameter — same as the ones up front. It also adds stronger six-piston calipers, already used up front, to the rear brakes. Carbon-ceramic brakes will be standard on the 2009 Murcielago.

Chrome Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren spotted in… Dubai

Where else would you see a chromed out Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren than in the land of the chromed out Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, a matte-gold Nissan GT-R and a matte-black Bugatti Veyron. GlobalMotors reader Francis caught this chromed out SLR in the parking lot outside of the Mall of the Emirates.

Of course other cars you can catch in the pictures are a Porsche 911 Turbo, Lamborghini Gallardo, Bentley Flying Spur and a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe.

Just another day at the mall in Dubai.

Car and Drivers Annual Lightning Lap around Virginia International-- See how your Favorite Cars Did!

What car—for the money—delivers the best combination of power, handling, and braking? That question is fundamental to the ongoing mission of this magazine and the core element of all our road tests. We should also point out that those traits are the key ingredients of a car’s fun-to-drive (FTD) quotient, something we value far more than cup holders and/or trunk volume.

But—and this is widely overlooked—the elements of FTD are also the key components of active safety, a vehicle’s ability to respond to and avoid an accident situation. The lane-change exercise, part of our comparison-test regimen, provides insight to this ability, but Lightning Lap delivers an indelible blueprint. Unless you’re a taxi driver in Baghdad, you might argue that no accident-avoidance situation goes on for three minutes, but of course our interest extends beyond dodging drivers whose text messaging overrides their attention to the road. We want to see how well a wide *variety of performance cars combine their various dynamic elements in absolute terms in a controlled environment.

Controlled environment means racetrack, and for Lightning Lap that means the 4.2-mile Grand Course at Virginia International Raceway, near Danville, Virginia. This beautiful road circuit is an outstanding blend of fast chutes, blind-entry corners, and lots of changes in *elevation, including a series of climbing esses that’s one of the most challenging sections of racetrack in America.

We rank our finishers strictly on lap times, taking the best run achieved by each car during our two-day event. The cars are grouped by price, and there was some very fast traffic this year in the upper groups (LL3 and LL5; there were no cars in the LL4 price category). The four fastest all lapped VIR quicker than our previous absolute record of 2:58.2/82.7 mph. How much quicker? Read on. And let the games begin.

BRABUS Unveils 22-Inch Rims And Aluminum Sport Fenders For Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Let me speak candidly for a moment when I say there are some things in life that simply are better when they're bigger. A few things that appropriately fall under this adage include flat-screen televisions (for men), diamonds (for women), and the irrefutable proof that creationism is true and a Designer does exit – the posterior of one Jennifer Lopez (for me).

In the world of automobiles, size is equally as important, no more so than in the highly rapped out about realm of rims. Just ask BRABUS, who recently took three of their most popular Monobolock designs and super sized them, upgrading each to include 22-inch variants. The Monoblock Magnums®, as they should be but unfortunately aren't known as, can be fitted on either the S-Class or CL-Class, and come in the size of 10Jx22. Throw in some high performance 275/25 ZR 22 tires on the front combined with a pair of 295/25 ZR 22 tires in the back, and you've got a combo more than suitable for an airing on the next episode of MTV Cribs.

Want to see them? I thought you might. To do so, keep scrolling to check out each of three 22-inch BRABUS Monobock designs on both the Mercedes S-Class and CL-Class models. For some added fun, BRABUS also debuted new aluminum sport fenders for the S-Class, which as you'll see below, add an extra dash of venting behind the front wheel arches of the luxury sedan.

I have one question:

Does it hover ?

It HAS to.

With those blue led lights...
