Crashed....

Hi There guys,

Well - yesterday at 10am - I was driving on Ocean Parkway towards the prospect expressway to head into Manhattan for an appointment.

By Cortelyou road, an oil tanker did not yeild to traffic and jumped his light making a left... My light was green but by the time I hit the brakes ... too late and I slammed into him by the front of his truck. I believe the impact was a 20mph impact.

I am fine. I truly did not feel anything but a bump - which is a testament to how these cars are built. I will need a new hood, bumper, fenders, and POSSIBLY a radiator, and an A/C....

All in all - the damage really is limited to cosmetic. The engine turned on and the police told me to drive it to the service road which I did with no problem.

I'll post some pictures when the dealership sends it to me.

I am fully covered - state farm insurance actually told me the dealership can begin work right away without having to send an adjuster so that was good news.

I do have a $1000 deductible but since this is my first real accident - my rates will not be raised and the insurance company has enough to go after their insurance because no matter what the trucker says I did - if he says he did not go through a red light - it would mean he did not yield to cars heading straight.

Anyways, I will keep you posted. I really am ok. Got out - and walked a bit to make sure my parts were working.

Just upset of course... however, it could have been MUCH worse...

I do have my DESIGN01 plate on my desk because it broke off and I have to have it replaced...

I was wondering - since I need a new bumper / hood / fenders...I was wondering if I should put on the 63/65 style bumper.

What do you all think?

Brad

PS - I have no idea why I am still on probation...although maybe it gives me that bad *** edge that I did not have in school. Those of you who know me - are applauding

To be honest, I did not keep track of time - but I do believe so.

Crash happened around 10am... so I imagine between waiting for the police, taking the report, waiting for the tow truck...etc

Here is a stupid illustration I did. The Green is where I was coming from. The red is where the truck was coming from. The Pink is the truck at moment of impact.
As you can see - he literally cut 6 lanes of traffic (Ocean Parkway is 3 lanes each way).

There is no way he can defend his actions.

Turning from a service lane on Ocean Parkway would bring you to the perpendicular Traffic light - which would have been RED....since I had a green. So not only did he go through that Red Light - but he did not yeild to traffic making a left. The guy had a real attitude. He cut that out when the police from the 66th precinct came by and mentioned my father was their accountant. However, they were fair with us both - especially once they found out the cirumstances behind the crash.

Correct. Cars in the middle lane...blocked the diagonal vision to the service lane on the opposite sides, along with cars in the on coming lanes on the left...also blocking the view... with him going fast into a left turn crossing traffic - it came into my line of vision before I even went into the cross walk - applying my brakes even b4 my front wheels entered the cross walk.

Police even said there was NO WAY I could have avoided that unless I was just NOT planning on stopping at a Green light for some odd reason. I wasn't speeding, or else the impact would have been REALLY bad...

Well the light was red - About 1/2 way down the block, it turned green - so i stopped braking, stepped on the gas...and thats what happened. I wasn't accelerating hard because of the light - medium traffic on the road. Just was not really in a rush I suppose.

Glad you're okay.

Wonder what would've happened if you had Distronic. Not sure if it'll brake before impact to reduce the crash severity. Probably wouldn't have stopped in time neither anyway.

LOL Bruce,
That was funny. I guess you are right! I will have them pop the dings out of the door. Small tiny ding..

How's your car. I still consider it to be the best S Class out there.

True. I don't know what would have happened. However the seatbelt tensioner squeezed my like a nymphomaniac on death row =)

It was impressive. And - I really truly did not feel the impact except the initial jolt.

It was very strange. HOWEVER, I expected the damage to be a lot less because of the lack of "bang" factor.

Sorry for your car. But it's great to know you are in good shape.
Just imagine for a second you were driving a Hyundai Accent. Maybe the structural integrity of some of your body parts would have been compromised.

We are waiting for some pictures!

Very sorry to hear the bad news. At least you're OK and were protected in that tank of a car.
Hopefully they will do a great job repairing it and you can get behind the wheel ASAP.

Well Thank you my friend. Sadly - I wanted to take the car to Washington DC on March 17.

I wonder if Mercedes Manhattan can pull off a miracle and dedicate next week to fixing it...Although it is doubtful. If not, I will take my dad's car and give him my rental.

Hi! AsianML

My Service Advisor is having some pictures taken on Monday by MB.

I'll post them when I get it. I did not use my camera phone at the scene because I was slightly shaken up to say the least.

In any event, I am alright. Hope it can be fixed quickly.

Thanks.

haha . not quite - but I almost did when the driver of the oil truck walked over to me as I was calling cops and as going 100mph and passing a red light.

I'll say it now, and I'll say it in front of a judge, on the lives of my parents, the light was absolutely 100% Green - even as I was 10 feet BEHIND the crosswalk.

He without a doubt in my mind drove recklessly making a turn - I assume to try and beat the cars starting to drive with the light now green. (I was approaching the light as it turned green...)

Further, had I been travelling 100mph or even 40mph....the impact would have been disasterous...Was doing about 30mph when I hit the breaks - making my impact around 15 - 20mph - which the police said as well - judging by the damage.

Glad you're k.

The damage suffered by your car was it taking the impact for you. It looks bad but that's just the way top modern cars work in crashes now. You could have crashed at thrice that speed and would still have walked away. The passenger cell on the W221 S is exceedingly strong.

Thanks!

Yea you are right. Very strong passenger cell. I appreciate the car very much for its ability to absorb the energy.
