carsnob: It is a shame that 4matic is only offered up to the 550 and not on the 600. I guess that huge amount of torque is too much for the current system. Who knows, maybe in the future ?

I would have to disagree with that. I have ridden in a 4matic in the snow and it makes a huge difference.

i think the 4matic system is brilliant. i live in chicago and we had one of the most brutal winters (cold, snow, ice) in thirty+ years, and my s550v4 (non amg sport package) performed flawlessly. i never changed to winter tires or wheels or anything. my car came equipped with the upgraded 19" multi-spoke wheels and conti tires. no complaints whatsoever. i would never buy another non-4matic car (if i continue to live in a snowy climate) again. my opinion.

The sport tires are absolutely horrible in the snow. My dealer put on the Pirelli Sottozero's and stored my sport tires for me until spring. The tires were expensive but I can tell you that with the combination of these tires and the 4-matic, my 550 could climb trees. We just had a major blizzard here (NE Ohio) where we had 2' of snow. I was one of the only cars on the road and was having no problems whatsoever. I've had my '08 S-550 for 7 months and already have 25,000 miles so I needed something I could depend on in all weather conditions.
I'd buy these tires again in a heartbeat. Also, they don't look like traditional snow tires. You wouldn't know they were snow tires by just looking at them. They actually look normal on the car and I don't have to have a spare set of wheels.
