Front windshield replacement?
auto glass repair shop, and local mercedes dealer. They quated $1300 and
$2300.
Of course, the insurance company said, they will pay the lowest of the two
bids. My question is
I have night view assist. Does W221 have two different glass type for one
with nightview, or one without nightview?
What do I have to ask to the local shop to use original part other than glass
by itself? I see the mirror and rain sensors are attaced to glass.
(the local shop ordered facotry glass to the mercedes dealer across the road today)
Anybody had any experience with glass replacement on W221?
I had couple replacement in BMW and ACURA, but first time in MERCEDES.
FYI: The only MBUSA approved aftermarket for glass repair as per bulletin S-B-67.00/20 AUG06 is NOVUS http://www.novusglass.com/autoglass_...s.cfm?state=NY
PM your VIN along with your email address and I will forward a MB datacard for your 221 listing option & paint codes, etc. if you want a copy.

The price difference still sounds high. All S500/S550 cars should have thermal insulating and IR reflecting glasses all round. Would be nice to have the part number of the lower price windshield. Smaller Euro cars that do not have Night View come with a non-IR glass which makes a difference. The Night View glass should be almost the same as the standard US glass, except I guess a difference at the camera area (even that would not have to be different because of the RF window area on other cars at the place of the IR camera but I guess there is a different opening on the shields for the camera) Like konitstiger indicated, the part number is different even for US cars with or without Night View).

Yes you have a different glass type. Lets also remember that this glass uses infrared so its always more expensive. As for your insurance company, tell them that by law they can not tell you where the car will be repaired, or what they FEEL like paying. They better pony up the money and that your only obligation is the deductible.
I know on my State Farm insurance,my glass breakage protection entitles me to pay something like $50, then the insurance pays the rest.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Geico told me that if I want to go with MB, they will cover the glass ($1,600) plus $40 for first labor/hour and $30 for the next. Out of curiosity I called MB, they quoted $2,800. So glass coverage is a must.
You guys are correct, night vision glass has a different cut out of infrared portion.
By the way, the cost difference between dealer and local shop is
INSTALLATION COST. PARTS are exactly same.
Mercedes dealer charges 6.3 hours and labor cost is over 700 dollars.
1st. I am not sure that windshield replace takes more than 6 hours.
Second, my service advisor told me that there is a guy who does window work in the dealer, who trained in Germany. I think that the cost is high because not many people change glass in the dealer, and dealer have to pay his salary anyway, so the cost for the customers is high.
3rd. The local shop is called Diamond Triump auto glass, which has alot of shops in nationwide, so I believe they can do good installation. They said they will use glass from the dealer, and I was in the shop while the guy called dealer to order the glass. He gave the vin number to dealer to order the glass, so I think it will be the factory glass with night view.
My insurance is also statefarm. and I don't have deductable for glass.
The insurance company said, they will pay for the original factory glass and parts plus labor. But for some reason, the mercedes dealer don't do insurance claims, and they charge way more than insurance company normally pays to the local shops. Because the mercedes dealer don't accept statefarm's rate, the insurance company can not pay 700 for the labor.
They also said that I can choose any shops that I want with factory glass but not mercedes dealer.
So, I will replace the glass in the Diamond Triump Auto Glass with facotry glass. Nothing from my pocket.
I will post reply after I do the replacement.

I'm assuming it falls under our comprehensive insurance coverage?
