NEW iPHONE 3G BLUETOOTH COMPATIBILITY
I JUST PURCHASED A NEW APPLE IPHONE 3G VERSION FROM AT&T YESTERDAY AND I WANT TO PAIR IT WITH MY WIFE'S 2008 S550.
I UNDERSTAND I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE A BLUETOOTH ADAPTER FROM MY DEALERSHIP'S PARTS DEPARTMENT.
HERES MY QUESTION. HAS ANYONE RAN INTO ANY DIFFICULTY PAIRING THE NEW IPHONE WITH MB'S BLUETOOTH SYSTEM ON THE S-CLASS AND DOES THE IPOD SYNC SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT ANY HURDLES?
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IT WORKS OUT SEEMLESSLY BEFORE I PURCHASE THE BLUETOOTH ADAPTER.
ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE GREAT!
THANKS.
JT

The Bluetooth Interface Module is not yet certified for the 3G. This is the place to check for further information:

I am using the iPhone 3G in a 2007 S550 with a newly purchased bluetooth puck (I previously used the handset cradle) and have had no problems with the phone pairing and uploading contacts into COMAND. Callers on the other end seem to notice improved sound quality as well. Go ahead and get the phone...finding one however, may cause a bit of frustration. Good luck!

Update: While I am able to pair and use the iPhone 3G with no problems, I have since noticed that when hooked up to the iPod connector the iPhone 3G does not *charge* -- The iPhone still works fine as an iPod, however Apple removed firewire charging support in the iPhone 3G so the phone won't charge when hooked up to the MBZ iPod connector...
The iPhone 3G charges over USB only, and in case you were wondering the iPod/iPhone cable is a 30 pin cable that has traditionally supplied both firewire and USB power...
So... Mercedes has recently announced an *iPhone* specific adapter which sits in the center console and replaces the obnoxiously large bluetooth connector and allows the iPhone to work as a Phone and an iPod that's controlled through the command interface....

I am thinking of having my dealer install this when I go in for my service B in a couple of months, hopefully by then their techs would have been briefed and have a clue about what I am talking about.

Apple probably is one of the best with their products having the least issues but it often is from a very restricted interworking scenario. Like here, some do report phone book errors even with the MB puck while generally iPhone is among the best with the MB BT setup. Appple probably looks best after the US MB BT compatibility while the Euro devices are different (unfortunately to some extent, even if the complete lack of BT SAP support was ignored). But when less known devices are used, the small issues when trying to follow the BT standards start to become visible. An example currently the ViseeO issues with BT (where I'm sure it is actually an issue at the Apple side even if this small manufacturer is trying to figure out a way to overcome the current incompatibility.
What I mean is that even the best product has its issues, better to check always for the particular scenario that concerns oneself.

Do you actually mean how to download an address book to Comand in a way that it is permanently available even without a phone being present? What I did was I selected the whole address book from my phone and sent it over BT to Comand. This should work from a laptop too, like sending an Outlook address book. I believe I had some problems with certain phone models where address book entries had to be sent individually.

Yes it did. But upload is not exactly what it did. I can see all my addresses when the iPhone is connected only. So technically they are not uploaded to Comand, just synced when connected.
Comand also displays the name of the incoming or outgoing phone call.
I have used both a first gen iPhone with 1.1.4 and a 3G with 2.0.

The factory installed cradle on the 2007 S550, and presumably others as well, requires the Motorola V710 phone with MB internal electronics and Verizon as the service provider. A Motorola V710 phone is available from Verizon but without the MB internal electronics and will not work with the MB factory installed cradle. For all other phones and service providers, MB offers a blue tooth dongle (puck) available from MB dealers. As a general matter, the factory installed Motorola V710 phone in the factory installed cradle is reportedly more reliable and less susceptible to dropped calls and fade outs.
