What people seem to forget is that EPA mpg estimates used to be fairly close to EU. But EPA changed its test regime because the old test regime resulted in mpg estimates that were found to be overly optomistic for actual modern American driving habits. Yes, some drivers achieved the old mpg estimates, or even higher, but the majority did not. On the 2007 MB S550 4matic, the old-style EPA estimate was 18mpg combined. The new estimate, 16mpg combined. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calcu...=S550%204matic
I stand by my opinion, that the average US driver likely achieves less than the EU mpg ratings.

And it would be just as easy, if not easier, to achieve 17 mpg by changing driving habits.

On the other hand, the EU ratings show the capability of the car on the highway, so people know what the true max is, and the other ratings are then more "EPA" like.
